My understanding is that SKSes are built with an attached magazine. The local gunshop has one that I assume was converted to detachable mags. It's also been removed from the original stock and put on a folding stock synthetic. Can stripper clips be used to reload magazines in/out of the rifle (mostly just curious)? How much should one of these run?

From what I've read the norincos rank higher than other SKS options. I've also read that some of the magazine manufactures aren't very good or that the guns are just picky as far as which mags work for them.

Enlighten me oh gun gurus :)

New Questions:

How do I tell if it's actually a Norinco?
How do I tell if it's an SKS-D or -M?
I assume if it's out of it's original stock and into a collapsable syn stock it's worth less?
What should I look for to make sure the barrel isn't FUBARed?

It varies, some people get them to work with the larger cap magazines, I've never had an SKS work with them, Russian, Chinese, nor Yugo... best bet was to stick with the factory magazine.

Also, some Chinese SKS did come with an attached 20 round magazine. and from what I've seen and read they work.

If its a Norinco SKS-D or SKS-M it will sell for a mint. Those accept regular AK type magazines and I've seen them on gunbroker for between $700-950.

Check your local laws as well, as some don't allow you to add the "hi capacity" magazines.

What you probably saw was one with the aftermarket 20 round "duck bill" magazines. Shouldn't go for over $4-500 though. If he wants too much for it, just look around online for one. They're about $200 new (not Norinco's), and the synthetic stocks can be had from Tapco for about $90, cheaper elsewhere I'd imagine.

I picked up my Norinco for about $200. It had a bunch of useless (to me) accessories that I sold off for about $80 all together.

I have 2 AKs and this SKS. It's not my main rifle, and I like it for it's classic looks. The Chicom fiberglass stock was $20 from www.sksman.com BSW

I went all the way wild with mine. Norinco receiver and barrel. Just about everything else isn't original or has been smoothed or modified. Tapco seems to be the only aftermarket mag manufacturer that works at all reliably, mine have only jammed once or twice and then only with low powered training ammo. It does about 1 moa with handloads out to around 150 yards. I have gotten a sub moa group out of it at 100 with 3 shots before. The real problem with most SKSs is that people shoot crappy ammo for accuracy out of them. Wolf works great for volume of fire and cheapness, but upgrade to something real if you want to make your rifle shine. Lapua makes the best preloaded rounds of anyone but they are stupid expensive. Handloading from winchester brass is quite easy. Fiocci, Remington, and federal also make brass cased rounds. Here she is:

In MD we are limited to 20 rounds max. Actually kind of impressive considering the rest of our gun laws. How would i find out if it's an SKS-D/M? And I suppose I should also ask how to make sure it's actually a Norinco? The guy there, and he seems like he knows his schtick, said it accepts AK mags IIRC. I'll swing by again tomo and get more details.

I've just always wanted an SKS ever since I first shot one. My uncle will be pissed, but man I can't afford a Bushy lol.

Norinco

I have a norinco sks,I bought that new, years ago,That came with cleaning kit, oiler, and some kinda of banalero, that held striper clips.
Yes i have to clips that fit it.mine was never altered, but i do have two different styles of clips.both are 30 rounders, one looks just like the factory 10 rounder, but holds 30,and made in the USA,the other,i do have to say looks like a piece of crap.i'll try to post some pics of the clips tomrrow.
I shot 1000s of rounds using them, and when i say i shot 1000s i mean as fast as i could pull the trigger, had it so hot paint was melting of the forarm,
so no problem with the 30 rd clips

Best info anyone can give ya is to reffer ya to a site dedicated to the SKS pattern rifles

http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php

The high road is a general fireams board with very limited milsurp interest (but is growing) for the best info your better off looking at sites which specialize in milsurp guns... in this case the SKS....

ya need to learn the basics at the very least, a type M or D are very obvious as they are designed for AK mags but if ya don't understand what a standard SKS is then it becomes very difficult to explain to ya what a factory modded SKS is as ya have no baseline to work from... g luck

gtmerkley's DAD

bought my norinco sks paratrooper model right before Clinton got in office I was in a long line with gt waiting to buy one. I picked out one that was milled and half the guys got out of line as that was the one they wanted I still never figured out why the only difference is that I can see is it has milling marks not as smooth as the others were. I thought about converting it but I can reload as faster with the striper clip then with my AK mag. and carry more ammo. so YA get that striper clip it will load the mag fine. the short barrel pt model will only give me a five MOA with the norenco ammo I got with the gun but gt got better with the Russian stuff. I stopped shooting it because it slammed fired with the Chinese norinco stuff but gt says he never had that happen with the Russian stuff.the only thing I can figure is because it was made when the Russians were showing the Chinese how to make them when they gave them the first machinery but I got the package deal too and no extra clips just 10 stripers AH I mean striper clips but my AR and AK work with striper CLIPS too. Just make sure You get the right ones the SKS wont work in gt's 47 or my tantel.
