Well I ordered a second Pietta 1851 Hickok Pietta to have a pair - about 4 months ago I bought the 1st one.

Well it arrived and there are 2 cosmetic issues about it - it is a CL 2013 year mark like my first one - but 1) the recent one lacks the notch for the carbine stock my first one has, and 2) the laser engraving looks much deep and less detailed on the recent one - but is fine and just like the other on the barrel and recoil shield. I am sure some variation is normal, but it looks significantly different - I am wondering if there was not some setting on the machine that got messed up or if they changed their patterning or something --- anyways, wondering what to do. Anyone else noticed an issue with the engraving? Also the second one does not have the CL year mark on the same place as the other one - it is tucked up almost under the front part of the trigger guard - anyone noticed that change?

If I send it back there is no guarantee I will get one with a carbine stock notch or better engraving - right?

They may have noticed that the original revolvers (or at least one of the pair) didn't have the carbine notch, and changed for that reason.

No idea about the engraving. I presume you'll have to ask them.

About the only way to insure getting a cosmetically matching pair is to order them at the same time - and even then it sometimes doesn't work.

it is from Cabelas --- the more I look at it i am liking the depth -- it matches the barrel style of 'engraving' more -- it does look a bit different than the other one but it is not bugging me as much

- i do wish that it had a stock notch though

I'll upload a couple of pics of it in a bit -

In the pic above, the one on the left is the new one - it is much deeper etched but not as blued - Also it has no date proof marks on the right part of the frame like the other earlier one (also CL 2013) - they are on the barrel next to the wedge and under the frame under the front of the trigger guard. I am now thinking on keeping them both - even though they are different a bit - What do you think? Which one do you like better?

I just wish the second one had a cutout for the stock in the grip like the first one - even though the recoil shields are not cut out for it.

I think they both look great and they look like a matched pair of 51' Colt Navys. The "REAL" Gun that won the west!!!:)

It is impossible to predict how color case hardening will turn out and I notice that neither frame has the fourth screw for a shoulder stock.

If that notch in the backstrap, I think that's what you're saying, then just but another backstrap and put it on. They sell em.

Unless you want a shoulder stock for both guns, I wouldn't obsess about it. I'm not an expert, but the recoil shield may need modified for a stock too.

there was a skeleton stock that didn't need a cut out in the blast shield, or a notch in the grip, but you did have to replace the hammer screw, with one that I call the Frankenstien bolt...it stuck out on both sides of the frame, and was the attaching point for the stock.

yeah, I sold mine, before I found out that the repros of the wire stock [from Pietta, I think] were being discontinued. now I wish I hadn't.

I would order two more, keep the one of the three I wanted, and return the other two. But that's just me...

They are both pretty sweet pieces of art actually.
