I got it as a gift from a friend. It is in .243 win with a cheap bushnell riflescope. I still don't know when it was manufactured, but the serial number is B8299509. What are your experiences with this rifle? I think it's in good condition. I'll post pics later.

I'm guessing it's the same deal as mine: no serial number on the barrel, but in the left side of the receiver instead. Mine also starts with the letter B and is in 30-06. I'm assuming this means it was made during the time Remington messed around with the serial numbers between 99 and 01. As has been said, keep it oiled and it will work fine.

The 7400 was introduced a little over 30 years ago. It has many design features which are improvements over the previous model 742. 7400 is a keeper!

That trigger assembly has been rode hard and put up wet...

It looks (from here) to be purely cosmetic though...

I have a 1989 7400 .30-06 Carbine, and it is one of the most accurate rifles out of the box I have ever seen...

Yeah it's cosmetic, I tried it today with the irons and cycles well all 4 shots. I'll try sighting in later.

I have owned one in .308 since the mid 80s. It was used mainly for deer hunting, so it probably has no more than 500 rounds through it, but it has never had a FTF or FTE, & accuracy has been very good.

I have one in 30-06. No problems ever. Reliable and accurate as in 2 inch groups or better with factory ammo at 100 yards.
