Attached image shows groups of three with IMR 3031, 22.1 and 22.2 grains. I've been using these dogtown HP 55's and they must be pretty soft because they don't take much of a charge. This morning I had to quit after the second group. It looks like I might even go lower! Does this seem unusual? Anyone else have this experience with these particular bullets? Not that I'm complaining.

I shoot Dogtowns HP and SP all the time in AR, bolt, and break action guns. In 223, 22-250.

Im trying to figure out what OP means by "they must be pretty soft because they don't take much of a charge. This morning I had to quit after the second group. It looks like I might even go lower!"

Don't know what caliber or what gun, or stats of reload.

I think he might be referring to them being so soft that friction is reduced such that they make it out of the barrel? Just guessing though.

Are you saying the Dogtown bullets are too soft to be accurate with 22.2 grains of IMR 3031? I don't have a reloading manual in front of me, and I don't know what yer reloading for, but is that load over max.?

I don't think it has anything to do with the bullets being too soft for nearly a starting load in .223.

They work fine in 22-250 at another thousand FPS faster then you are pushing them with 22.1 grains in a .223.

Any chance your barrel is heating up because you are shooting groups too fast, and starting to wander a little?

Anyway, you may find more then one sweet spot between the Starting load and Max load.

And you won't find them by shooting two groups with light loads and quitting.

My CZ 550 Varminter in .22-250 fires those same 55-grain HP Dogtown bullets with superb accuracy.

At 3850 fps at the muzzle, it RELIABLY groups five rounds under 3/4" from 100 yards, and will yield that performance for CONSECUTIVE groups.

I recently bought 500 Midway 55 softpoint Dogtowns for comparison against the hollowpoints, but I'm entirely content with the HP version and will be stocking-up with a few thousand more when they're back in stock.

They are one of the great bargains for varmint loads, considering the very reasonable price (and the number I fire)... and they are wicked on ground squirrels as far away as I can see the little rascals.

The price is also attractive for general-use bullets in the AR/Mini-14 rifles, too.

They seemed softer than other bullets because of the fouling. Higher charges continued to produce accurate groups last week (see Imr 3031), but I started to run into a lot of copper fouling. I would rather just sacrifice one or two fouling shots at lower pressure to get in the zone. This for target shooting only.

Also, better load representation this week because I put in my contacts and lightened up on the trigger pull. Wow! Who knew?
