I put together a custom Kimber rifle (.308 Win) for deer & elk this season less than a week before the start of the season. I have quite a lot of Remington Hog Hammer 168gr TSX ammunition that I was given by the engineer that developed the load when I worked for the company. I figured I'd try...
Congratulations! I have two S20s with both types of stocks for both, if that makes sense. In the spirit of full disclosure, the 6.5 PRC shot incredibly well from the get go but the .308 Win with 20" barrel hasn't really performed the way I expected. I've been using a SilcencerCo QD brake and...
Clearly another member who has no clue about hunting out west but who has tracked an elk 30 miles and shot a deer 1.5 miles away.
This tells me pretty much all I need to know. Thanks for the clarification. :barf:
That hasn't been my experience but that's ok. I've shot quite a few animals including elk, mule deer and white-tail using .375 H&H, .308 Win and .300 Win Mag. I've only ever hunted with solid copper bullets, either Barnes or Federal (not sure who makes the bullet for them). The only one that...
I'd go with the Barnes load, but I only hunt with copper bullets since I'm not keen on eating lead. Also, it will be flatter shooting, and 200gr is plenty for a deer.
I posted a table showing the weights of various components earlier in the thread. The Precision butt stock and forend are heavier than the Hunter versions that I list. In order for Sako to significantly reduce weight they'd have to lighten the barreled action and/or the butt stock. I don't...
You won't get any argument from me. The 5-shot group I show at the start of this thread is one of the most amazing results I've ever seen from a factory rifle shooting factory ammunition. They're not entry level cheap but the technology combined with the performance makes them worth every...
I have hundreds of pieces of Hornady brass that was free so I'm not going to invest in better brass at the moment. I have a nice AMP annealer so hopefully the primer pockets hold up long enough to be useful.
I dropped off the head to the taxidermist yesterday for a full shoulder mount. Seems like I'll be able to pick up my elk from last year sometime in December. That's the problem with a really good taxidermist whose work is in high demand ... you have to wait 12 to 14 months to get the mount...
Is that what you get out of this thread, that folks here are walking in the opposite direction just to boast on a forum? o_O I guess neither of you hunt out West where shots in the 300 to 500 yard range are fairly common, not out of a need to fulfill a fantasy but because it's the only way...
Yep, I just ordered 10 boxes for the PRC. I'm thinking that the 127gr LRX in the PRC would make for an awesome all-around hunting rifle. Sheep, antelope, deer and elk.
It was a gift from the owner of Spartan Precision but you can buy them from bladehq.com . They have the black handled version of the knife I have and an orange handled version of the 4" blade. That Sandvik 14C28N steel is the bees knees. I've always liked Scandinavian design and quality and...
That's awesome ... congratulations! It is on the heavy side but I've hunted with much heavier. Once you shoot it I think you'll be very impressed. I was astounded by the 5-shot group mine produced with factory Hornady ammunition and how easy it is to connect with 11"x11" steel targets out to...
Thanks. I used my favorite factory hunting ammunition i.e. Federal Premium Vital-Shok 180gr Trophy Copper. Quite the mouthful but I've shot more than a few Trophy Copper variants and haven't found any factory ammunition that will match it for accuracy and terminal performance. I've shot three...
I know this isn't the knife forum but I do want to give a shout out to the Casstrom knife that I've now used on three elk and two deer. I'd rather have a Kydex sheath for it as opposed to the fancy leather thing shown, but for a do it all, super sharp, extremely practical, easy to clean, fixed...
That's the exit wound showing where he's in the bucket so I suppose that means I hit the passenger side. :D He was facing to my right, angling towards me a bit so not broadside. When I gutted him the top of the heart was messed up.
