    Coated Bullet Thoughts?

My experience with Hi-Tek is that it has its limitations. The coating goes on thin and can only handle so much velocity and pressure before you can breech the coating and begin to lead. I reverted back to powder coating rather quickly and it's a lot easier. My PC on average goes on at about .003...

Marlin 1895 GS and a barrel full of lead

Just be sure that what you're getting is actually leading, and not just crud build up from the powder. The more I shoot AA5744, the more I'm thinking it's a little dirtier than Western Powders likes to let on. Pretty obvious with all the unburned granules you get. The "leading" I think I'm...

Marlin 1895 GS and a barrel full of lead

I'm running AA5744 in my guide gun under an Accurate 46-360m in the 1400-1500FPS neighborhood. I do experience some mild leading at 1500+ FPS, but it's nothing too bad; alloy is aircooled hardball. My rifle is a remlin and the bore is rough and even j-words will start to foul eventually...

    45-70 plinker rounds

I have a cat sneeze load with the same bullet running TrailBoss... it is very light. I run a max trap door load with the same bullet over H4198 for hunting, but I'm about to change that up with a new mold from accurate, and some 5744. Honestly, the 45-70 has such a wide range of loads that...

    Instructors Bias

Like I said, look it up. It's not hard to find. The studies showed that people under stress if not adequately trained forgot to deactivate the safety upon drawing their weapon. These studies were just a few of the reasons why PD's now mostly use striker fired pistols without external safeties...

    Instructors Bias

IIRC, it had something to do with training. Just google it... several articles come up.

    Instructors Bias

I am inclined to agree with your assessment for the most part. There are some studies out there now that show that a carry gun with a safety is actually more dangerous, but I feel it's all in how you train.

Finn marked 91/30 and the sins of Bubba.

I used to be really into collecting Mosins but had to stop for a few years. Man what a great looking rifle now that you cleaned up the mistakes of bubba. Tom lives in the same town I live in, but I have not talked to him in close to 10 years. I just finished off my last can of 1/3rd mix on an...

    Instructors Bias

Considering the 1911 to be the best pistol ever designed would be like considering a 1970's Ford to be the better designed vehicle over a 2019 F150. The 1911 is a great firearm, and did it's job well over the years but we have much better designs for self defense, just like we have much more...

    45 Colt rifle loads

I'm pushing a 250gr. XTP over Alliant 2400 at roughly 1250ish from my 20 1894CB in 45 colt. Pressure is just enough to fire-form the brass without causing soot all over the case from the generous chamber. I fiddled around with 296 about 10 years ago but found it to be just a little too much for...

What gun disappointed you the most?

Marlin XL7 in 30-06. It was a great rifle but it didn't necessarily do anything better than all of the other deer rifles I owned at the time. It was a great shooter, but not anything to write home about. Not only that, it was a punisher when pushing a 180gr. Nosler Partition at the upper limits.

Factory 26 Type 56 SKS from the early 60's.

Marlin 1895 CB and CBA - Should the Barrel Lengths be Different?

I do tend to feel that maybe they should have gone with a 20" octagonal barrel on the CBA, but ONLY because that is the route they took on the 1894CB's for several years and Remington still does. With that being said, you also have to remember that the 1895G And GS are 18.5" barrels and these...

    Rifle barrel cleaning

I used to be very OCD and clean often, but as stated here, now I just clean when the rifle tells me to. Most of my rifles will tell me to clean in the 200 round mark, some I don't even bother at that point. With my iron sighted milsurp rifles it takes quite a while for me to see a change in...

RCBS Summit as the only press?

Here is my opinion on the Summit after owning one for a few months. As a back ground on myself, and my experience. I have been loading ammo now for over a decade, load for several different calibers, and usually average about 500 rounds a month shot/loaded when I'm on a roll and that has been...

    30-06 still King?

It's not king in my house for sure... in shear numbers 7.62x54r would take that crown. My go to hunting cartridges these days are the 30 WCF and 45-70 loaded to trap door levels. Nothing in the State of Texas requires anymore than that. I don't even really hunt all that much anymore, so the...

    Why did you choose .223?

I'm an experienced handloader that gets more enjoyment out of sitting in front of a chronograph playing with different bullets and powders, rather than finding a load that works, loading a bunch of that load and then sending all of them on one target. With 30 caliber bullets approaching nearly...

    Totally clueless on Nagants.

I'm late to the party, but you made a good choice. As far as rare goes, you should see my 1944 Tula 91/30. It has one unique feature... it has a hex receiver. Not very common at all... almost unicorn.
