    conversion cylinder mechanics

I don't think anyone has explained this elsewhere.. I am a little confused as to how a drop-in 5 shot conversion cylinder, like a howell's, can index correctly in a frame built for a 6 shot front loader cylinder.. I mean, on pulling back the hammer, it drops the bolt and the hand rotates the...

    new pocket pistols.. problem?

After playing with it some more.. I've noticed that the binding is being caused not by the vertical wobble.. rather it seems to be from a side to side wobble of the loading arm. if I keep it centered, the rammer does not bind up, but if it is leaning to the side a bit, it binds. the slot in...

    new pocket pistols.. problem?

I finally broke down and bought a pocket pistol.. actually, I couldn't decide between the remington and colt, so I got both... the remmie seems tight, I like the grip, hate the trigger.. the ubuert 1849 pocket might have a problem, and before I send it back to Dixie, I thought I would run...

    28 gauge vs .54 caliber

yeah, thanks.. I am going with a 14mm punch, so now I need to figure out what materials to use.. I have been researching all week.. seems there are as many card and wad materials as there are people to talk about them.. so, for each of the 3 materials I'll need.. overpowder card.. I have...

    28 gauge vs .54 caliber

nobody sells a punch with an ID of 0.550 that I have found.. but i think 14mm will work.. I could also try a thin brass tube, and sharpen it, mount it, etc.. not sure if it will cut through .5 veg fiber Now, anybody know where to by sheets of card/wad stock? circle fly hasn't answered...

    28 gauge vs .54 caliber

I just picked up a .54 caliber shotgun, but nobody seems to sell that size cards. Most seem to equate .54 and 28 gauge, but .28 guage is .550. A nice chart at trackofthewolf shows the card diameters for shotguns, and it shows the cards or wads being just a bit larger than the bore.. a few...

    Sitting Fox Custom Muzzleloaders

order wrong.. I was considering buying a few kits from ray, but am reconsidering it.. I picked up one of their 'finished' rifles.. just a cheap production gun from investarms (they make Lymons) It was advertised as a .50 carbine.. What I got had a tag on it like you see on a sales rack...

    Dovetail, Weld, or Tap?

Thanks.. I guess nobody else has an opinion.. I mentioned JB because, to my shame, I am already using some.. I searched and searched for a butt cap of a particular shape and material.. of course, nobody makes one. So I did what any good husband does.. I raided the wife's kitchen and...

    Dovetail, Weld, or Tap?

I have a need to install an underlug, vertical bolt style, in the bottom of a blackpowder pistol. 15/16" octagon, .45 cal. the lug will be merely stabilizing the fore portion of the stock, probably a #6 or #4 screw. I don't want to do a horizontal wedge or pin style, there won't be enough...

    Slow rust bluing

Hi.. hope someone is still watching this thread... I have a number of muzzleloaders that I want to reblue.. they were originally just quick cold blued, and have always looked bad... functional, but ugly. I am going to spend this fall slow rust blueing the lot. but I have a few questions. Some...

    Just broke a nipple...

I thought this was more a black powder thing than a general gunsmithing thing.. though I see now there are some sticky blackpowder gunsmithing threads.. I will look around more in the future before starting new threads.. This is a Pietta 1851 45 steel frame.. I don't think this is the 'reb'...

    Just broke a nipple...

Argh.... Now I know why the 1851 navy I picked up at a swapmeet was only $75.. one of the nipples is stuck HARD. (pietta 1851 .45) First, I broke a standard cheap-o nipple wrench.. So I soaked it in pyroil for a few days. I pulled out the bigger gun, a 4.5mm impact socket I had ground...

    The THR Walker Club

I have been rethinking doing a hot blue on my walker kit.. I have done small tanks, for things like screws and other small parts, on the order of a quart size. Easy to heat, control, etc.. but this is an order of magnitude bigger, and is becoming more than my little suburban garage can...

    The THR Walker Club

DoubleDeuce 1.. it is the uberti kit, so all the metal is in the white.. When I got this I was thinking of doing some etching on the frame, but have decided not to now. the frame isn't cch, so blueing seemed best.. I am just going to do some brass inlays on the grip I planned, but going...

    The THR Walker Club

I have had an Uberti Walker kit sitting on the shelf for years. Now that I have the time to finish it, I have run into a few little blocks.. I plan to do a hot salt blue on the backstrap, frame, cylinder, and barrel. I'm using the same 2:1 sodium hydroxide:sodium nitrate I use on chisels and...

    Anyone make their own BP?

Used to be able to get powder testers. They are basically a sawed off pistol with a spring loaded cover over the barrel. On firing, the resulting movement of the cover was an indication of the 'strength' of the powder. I know Dixie used to carry them.
