    A curious experience with Gunbroker

Saw a Browning HP slide listed, bid on it, I was the only bidder, checked back, the listing had disappeared-? My previous 2 experiences with Gunbroker positive, bought 2 Ciener units, no problem communicating with the sellers.

    Interchangeable parts...

..sort of fit. A nice return on an investment allowed to indulge myself. Bought an FEG Hi Power slide off EBay, slid right on my trusty 1966 FN made HP, barrel, recoil spring and guide all fit Nicely. Found the FEG slide stop and cut are designed differently. GPC lists the FEG slide stop, so...

    Interchangeable parts-won't

Bought a fixed sight slide for my S&W M639 from a member on another forum, a spare barrel of Ebay. The new slide and barrel wouldn't go on my pistol, saw the recoil spring and rod were not parallel to the barrel, found the radiused cut where the base of the rod is to fit was not cut properly...

Anyone else buying off EBay ?

I have done very well so far, buying spare barrels, slides, other parts for my long discontinued S&W M639 and 659. Excellent selections, prices very reasonable, prompt delivery to my PO Box.

    Ciener Conversions closes.

Just looked at their (his) website, emding a 40 year run. Bought mine at gunshows, never had any dealing with him,on other boards people said he was a grump, customer service often poor. Someone said he was a gifted machinist, but not that good a businessman. My two units are well machined and...

    Fantasy rifles

If I had the money, or the skills to do it myself I would have: 1. A carbine with interchangeable barrels in 9MMP, 38 Super-9MM Magnum ?, using 1911 magazines. 2. A carbine with interchangeable barrels in 40 S&W and 10MM Auto, 1911 magazines. 3. A carbine with interchangeable barrels in 45 ACP...

    Flop handgun rounds

The messages about designing a new round for concealed carry prompts this one. The ones that come to mind are: 1. The 9MM Federal. Designed for the Charter Arms revolver, then it was found it could be chambered in revolvers chambered for 38 S&W that could not take the pressure. 2. The 45...

    Obsolete calibers and cartridges.

I have seen this on other forums. The word "obsolete" is not correct IMHO, when the military declares something to be "obsolete" it is with drawn from service, all issued examples turned in, new equipment is issued, no spares for old equipment iare ordered, it is not supported. The M-1 Rifle and...

How long did muzzle loaders and cap and ball revolvers remain in use in the West?

IIRC Wild Bill Hickok stuck to his Colt Navies until his death in 1876, as others noted cowboys, farmers, etc. were not that well heeled, probably relied on barter, payment in kind. So how long before cartridge guns finally became the most used ?

    An important safety practice

On another board a member described an accident at a range, a BP shooter apparently put his long gun away from last season without clearing it then "forgot" it was loaded, loaded it again at the range and BLAM ! Several members said they mark their ramrods to show correct seating depth for their...

    How close is too close...

,,or, the Ethics of the Contact Shot. Charlie Askins wrote of the "belly gun"-you press it against your opponent's belly and pull the trigger." And a good argument for revolvers is they won't go out of battery when you do that. But is a contact shot evidence of malicious intent. "duty to...

    Dead end designs.

Handgun designs that have widespread recognition and are sought after but that manufacturers and later designers recognized had serious design flaws and manufacturing complications and have long since been dropped from production. Three that come to mine are the Luger, the Broomhandle Mauser-and...

    Favorite off brand handgun

Saw this posted on another board. My AMT Hardballer, bought it in 1978 when it was first introduced, IIRC it was the first, if not the first stainless M1911. AMT and its successor companies long gone. Mine shot too low even with the rear sight fully elevated, sent the slide back, they returned...

    Any Magna-Port shooters here ?

The thread about the Magna-Ported M-28 prompts me to ask this. I recall when Magna-Port was introduced it received glowing write ups in the gun magazines, Dan Wesson introduced something called Power Control. IIRC that had problems with residue-especially lead-gumming it up. Some of the board...

Relying on a vintage handgun for SD/EDC.

Saw this on another board, and I started a similar thread elsewhere. Rather than a cutoff date, I would have the following criteria. 1. Nothing from a long vanished manufacturer with spare parts either extremely scarce or non-existent. 2. Nothing made in WWII Germany or German occupied...

    Regarding safe queens.....

....my champion is my M1898 purchased in 1972-have yet to put a round through. Bought it as a collectible, as I did my M1896 Krag rifle and carbine. Don't feel deprived, some guns are for shooting, some are for owning. A friend has a nice collection of 1930s vintage radios, there's something...

Quality Control problems with 22LR ammo ?

Anyone else having any problems? The only 22 ammo available here in Central NJ/Eastern Pa. is Aquila, CCI and Federal, my Failure to Ignite, Failure to Eject and Extract rate has gone way up. At first I attributed it to older rifles and aging springs, my current shooter is a 1950s vintage...

    Speaking of imaginary rifles.....

..a carbine with interchangeable barrels chambered for 9MM/38 Super taking M1911 magazines. My preference would be a bolt action-easier to retrieve that brass, or some sort of bolt locking device. The Savage/Stevens/Springfield "gill action" rifles allowed that.

    Revolvers chambered for semiautomatic cartridges

I posted this on another board, got some interesting responses. With the exception of the ubiquitous 22LR and the S&W M-25 derived from the S&W M1917, none seem to have been commercial successes. They're one of those things, everybody says "Why don't they make..." then they do-and they don't...

    Regarding the ammo shortages.....

...are Remington and Winchester still producing ? At present I shoot only 22LR, all I see are Federal, CCi, and occasionally Aquila.
