223 Bullet weights for 1:7 twist

I have a new, unfired so far, AR-15, home built. It has an 18-in 1:7 twist barrel. I know it can handle heavier weight bullets but what is the best, safest, and reliable weights for the lower weight bullets? Should I expect it to shoot 52 to 55 grain ammunition reliably? Thanks, Dale

    .357 Remington Mag Rifle?

I'd love to have a Taurus Thunderbolt in .357. Bud's Gun Shop has them but they're .357 Remington Magnum - what's the difference between that and what we'd commonly call a .357 magnum?

How many AR-15 rifles or clones in the US?

With the long lead times for AR type rifles and lowers, I was wondering how many AR-15s do you think there are in the hands of non-LEO civilians in the United States. It seems like it must be 10s of millions.

    Quantity purchases questioned?

Something tells me there will be a new assault weapons ban in the next year or two - and that the new ban won't have a 10 year sunset like the previous one. As a result, I am considering trying to get grandfathered on a few items off my wish list. I'm just curious if I should expect a 3:00...

    Scope adjustment range

In another thread, I asked about long and short trajectory. This comes out of that discussion - and was something I had planned on posting anyway. Let's assume my scope is zeroed for 275 to 300 yards. Now I want to take a shot at 500 yards. The ballistics of the 30-06 indicate that there...

    Long versus Short trajectory

I am looking at the following quoted specs on a 30-06 cartridge. I'm confused by the difference between the Long Trajectory specs and the Short Trajectory specs. If I am zeroed to 200 yards and shooting at a deer at 500 yards, am I shooting 14.7 inches high or 50.5 inches high? And why...

How to use up 231 powder

About 15 years ago I was going to get into reloading and I bought a full setup from Dillon along with an 8 lb. can of Winchester 231 powder. I had loaded about 50 rounds of .45ACP when the shop was broken into and all the tools stolen. I still have the powder. So now I am ready to start...

    User provided handloading sites?

What do you all think of web sites where users upload their own load data? Would you ever follow the recommendation of some unknown person just because they had uploaded it to the Internet? I have been looking for CAS .357 rifle loads and a lot of searches yield a few different sites like...

SAAMI Ammo and powder burning videos

I know that the safety of storing powder and ammunition is a common topic in these forums. I did a search and really didn't find any current threads appropriate to add this to so I am starting a new one. Instead of reporting anecdotal reports or quoting laws - sometimes based on...

Is the car too hot for keeping guns

I sometimes keep a gun in my car. When I take the gun out at the end of the day, the metal is so hot that I can hardly hold the gun. Is this dangerous? Any chance ammo would detonate in the heat? Thanks, Dale

    Hand priming tool versus press

I am just getting started in reloading. I am considering a Dillon 550B press and dies for .38/.357 but I have one question - well, probably several before I load and fire the first round. I would like to decap and to prime my brass outside of the Dillon press. I am considering an RCBS hand...

    Have you seen my wife?

I don't know who took her or what they did with her but the look-alike that they replaced her with gave away the plot today when she said to me, "You know, you really should start looking into getting some reloading equipment." I live in a mobile home. That means no storage space and I don't...

    Anyone ever build a home-brew 1911?

It may be a stupid idea but when I stumbled on this page, http://www.wilsoncombat.com/a_frames_slides.asp, the thought struck me that maybe I could build a better 1911 than I could afford to buy. Who has done such a thing? What do you think? Thanks, Dale

What are the different press types?

I read the sticky post about required equipment for reloading and most of it made sense. Could someone provide some information missing from that article: what is the difference between turret versus progressive presses? What is the difference between a fully automatic press versus...
