    1895 marlin stock correct fit?

There is an new unfired 1895G in my hands. As is the case with many factory made guns, the fit is less than perfect. The upper and lower tangs are pretty tight, no visible gap, stock slides onto them smoothly. My concern is at the front of the wood, where the small flats at the rear body of...

    hunting bow values

Once again I will be getting a hunting bow. The last 2 times (10 and 20 yrs ago) these weapons interested me, I was surprised, but not nearly so much as now. The prices / value of a full power hunting bow (compound) seem shocking!! On the retail end, there are prices of 600 - 1200 dollars...

Decreased bullet drop shooting from above or below target?

Today my son and I made some fairly long target practice hits from the top of a hill side to the bottom. Distance guesstimated ~500yds. The line of sight angle from our position to the valley floor looked like ~45 degrees. He was shooting factory 165gr. loads, 180gr reloads (30-06) for me. The...

sabots vs minies for hunting ?

Planning to use a TC 50cal. (GrayHawk) for deer hunting this fall. How would a 44 or 45 pistol bullet , 270 - 300grains compare to a minie of 385-400gr. for accuracy? I am wondering about long range , 150 - 200 for me! A lot of reading on this issue basically has me convinced that there is...

    CZ 550 receivers cast?

How can the CZ / Interarms / Charles Daly, etc... rifles be valued so much less than a Win or FN rifle with similar design features? Considering building or buying a rifle in 375 H&H; the listing/asking prices on websites like Gunbroker and others vary hugely. From around 700 on the Rem798...

FFF powder loads for 45cal. carbine

My son got a new rifle for Christmas. It's barrel is quite short, 19". For shooting patched round balls, would FFF be a good choice? FF seems to be reccommended most often, but usually for bigger caliber, heavier bullet, longer barrel. Does anybody use FFF as their first choice, and why?

    Throat length for 7X57 ?

Having a my 30-06 re-barreled to 7X57. The 'smith asked me what type of bullets I would be using and he would cut the throat depth to best suit my choice. My usual choices lean heavily towards long for caliber slugs. After looking into that a bit more, I learned some of the mid-weght bullets...

    Ruger MKII 22 extraction/eject issue

This little pistol is giving me nightmares! Recently had a 'smith replace the ejector and that made no difference. A very helpful fellow at the range suggests that the chamber likely has a burr from dry firing, and reccomends lightly filing the chamber where the firing pin strikes. I've...

    Great scouting trip with son!

Went with my wife and son to the annual family trip to Lake Roosevelt (Columbia River above Grand Coulee Dam). This year is different, he and I will be returning to that part of the state this fall, trying to get his first deer tag notched. I'm pretty excited for us to bring home some venison...

    "Factory"loads for Pietta '58 Remington?

Are they kidding?? Found an online PDF Pietta manual and the loading data for 44 revolver (w/.454ball) states 12-15 grains is their min/max reccomended load of FFF black. Would the ball possibly get stuck halfway down the barrel? I want to believe the factory would put out good data, but this...

    CZ24 /1924 380, dumb question

This is the oldest new gun I've ever had my hands on! A friend lent me this pistol for the task of researching for him. A family member of his acquired it in a trade while in the military, and that was pretty much all he could tell me about it. A bit of internet digging tells me a 100% condition...

    good loads for inline 50cal?

A few months ago a frontstuffer rifle joined our family. I am concerned that I havent discovered what to feed it for good accuracy. The sabot/slug combo I want to use is a 240gr. 44cal. jacketd soft point. So far the results are terrible, lucky to get 3 shots on a pie plate at 50yds. Tried a...

    444 marlin good loads?

Just put a deposit on an older Marlin 444. It has a 24" barrel with their "micro-groove" rifling. Did some searching here and there to see what other folks load for them, most opinions were about which bullet for what animal. Since this is my first experience loading for a lever-gun in big...

    rebarreling Mod 700 to 7x57

This is a project in the planning and procurement stage. Does this chambering commonly work well in an '06 length action? I have a preference for long, heavy slugs, and believe a short action would require deep bullet seating and loss of powder capacity.

    7x57 rifle for junior?

My son will be joining me for some deer hunting in the not to distant future. I'm considering the long guns available and we need a medium power rifle. He will start with a 243Win. but if all goes well, will be able to use something bigger in the following years. Do you people see hunting...

    629-2 cylinder stop loose?

My 629 is hurting itself, the cylinder notches have some damage and it feels as if the "tightness" of the lockup is getting bad. I bought this one new, so I cant blame it on the previous owner. Has less than 500 rds. use, if this continues it will be broke before "broken in". The frame mounted...

    Gun safe, worthy purchase?

Maybe this is a no-brainer, but I'm interested in the opinions/experiences of others. Although the cost is not much different than ONE quality weapon, I'm questioning the necessity or value of having a safe: My local area seems pretty crime free, as far as burglary and "home invasion"...
