Over a year ago I was given the remains of a sporterizing project. It was at one point probably a nice Remington 03A3 it has a 4 groove barrel and that is probably it's only saving grace. The original stock is long gone and a butched up Fajen is its replacement.
So here is my question. I might like to turn this one into a shooter. I was told that some of the Mauser 98 stocks will also fit the 03 with a bit of relieving. I would really like to use a Hogue overmould stock. anyone know if this has been attempted?
I don't mind the experiment I just don't want to spend the $120 and not get anything out of it but a mess?

Any advice or comments?

The 1903 won't fit any Mauser stock without significant modification. Standard length Mauser 98 actions are 7 7/8" between action screw centers. The 1903/1903A3 is 7 13/16" between centers. Most of the Hogue Mauser stocks come with either aluminum pillars or a bedding block, both of which will make it significantly more difficult to inlet for a 1903.

Boyd's gun stocks (boydsgunstocks.com) has some 1903a3 stocks in stock (how's that for redundancy) and I've used a couple of their stocks on my Mausers and I'm very happy with them.

I have gone to Boyds Stocks, while lookiung for an in-stock, stock for my old 1917. They have military and sporter stocks for the 1903A3s.

Somebody also makes a plastic stock for the 1903A3s because I have one out in my shop.

B&C made a stock for the 03a3 at last check, but they have a disclaimer that its being made on old molds and they claim it may need some fitting. They were right. It did. Lots. I essentially had to gut the action area and rebed it. Still has work to do. Once it's done, it will be a nice stock, but more work than I had hoped for.

for stocks ebay is where I go, you'll want the straight style without grasping grooves. all 4 styles of stocks will fit but you'll have to make sure that it has the correct handguard size.

for small parts numrich is the best place.

You might want to check the forums over at odcmp.com They have a lot of the stuff that you would be looking for. Not going to be dirt cheap but you might find a deal or two.
