In reading various threads on CCW, I noticed there are numerous people who carry a condition one gun in an IWB holster at the 1:00 position. Of course, when you sit down, the muzzle is covering your own body. I am surprized I don't hear much about violating one of the primary safety rules:

Never let your muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.

It seems to me the 3:00 and 4:30 positions don't have this problem. Any comments?

Thats the main reason I don't carry up front.

However, in some holsters (like the Smart Carry) I believe your gun is parallel to your leg when seated, so its still pointed away from your body (although a ND would surely burn you and maybe graze you). Same thing could be said for a vertical shoulder holster (especially if you have a "spare tire").

It is inevitable that your muzzle will cross the paths of quite a few things you do not want to shoot, in the course of a day.

As long as you follow rule 3, and use a quality holster with the trigger guard covered, you're fine.

Shoulder holster, anyone?

Horizontal, I presume--makes you have a whole new perspective of standing in line, doesn't it? Could get kind of dicey standing behind somebody who decides to reholster his Glock and forgets to take his finger off the trigger (or something gets caught inside the trigger guard--(not necessarily picking on Glocks--just an example).

Range rules (unfortunately) do not always work for administrative handling--that's what makes a manual (operator) safety or a long, heavy trigger pull nice sometimes.

I know a number of police officers who carry their BUG in that position.

What if you bend over to pick up a penny?

The term "tail gunner' comes to mind.

:D

I think the pointing issue is more concerned with when the gun is being handled.

Even sitting in a dresser drawer it is pointed some place.

you cover your muzzle with more things than you think in the course of the day.

Had this one detective take off his coat while talking to someone...i was sitting down and the beretta in his shoulder holster was pointing right at my head. I could see the hollowpoint at the other end of the barrel
