1/7 or 1/9 twist?

I wish someone would put a fast twist in other 22 centerfires. I want to shoot heavy Bergers out of a 22-250, but everything out there is 1:12.

That's where good gunsmiths and custom re-barreling come into play.......

Also, you might check out the Savage line. I understand that they are now offering various twist rates in some of their varmint rifles. Something no other factory rifle maker is doing......

BTW.... if you like the Bergers, you should check out the JLK's.... ;)

Best regards,

I shoot 55 grain and 62 grain almost exclusively.

I don't shoot the lighter varmint loads, and I can't afford the heavier 70+ grain loads.

From reading the ammo oracle, it sounds as if a 1:9 is best for me.

However, most of the quality AR uppers that I am interested in are all 1:7.

I see a lot of people saying that it doesn't matter, that 1:7 will be fine.

What am I giving up by going with a 1:7? Flexibility is a non-issue for me. I have thousands of rounds of 55 and 62 grain stockpiled, that is ALL that I will be shooting. Is there any hit in accuracy that I will suffer with my particular bullet weights?

Is there any practical reason for me to stick with 1:9 instead of getting an upper in 1:7?

I have a 1:9 twist on my 16" HBAR, but I had to get a 1:7 twist to get an upper with a government profile 20" barrel. I've observed absolutely no difference between the two using 55- and 62-grain ammo. I say get whatever barrel you like best unless you're using bullets that are extremely light or extremely heavy.

Go with the 1:9. It is a great all around barrel twist for .224 centerfires and will handle pretty much anything except for the super-heavy weights. I have AR's with 1/7,1/8, and 1/9 twists barrels. My favorte load is the 69 grain SMK and the 1/9 shoots them the best!...On a side note, I do have a .22-250 Rem that was rebarreled to 1/9 and it likes Barnes' 62 gr triple shocks. Wizzing out of the .22-250, it is a fierce little round!
