I just bought a very "Grungy" Remington Model 58 in 16 Gauge with a plain barrel 28" Modified Choke. It cleaned up pretty well mechanically & is as slick as "snout". I also bought a flat each of the Remington 1 oz 6 & 7.5 loads. I just want some trigger time to see if this will supplement my Ithaca 37 16 IC in the field. Will I totally embarrass myself as I am not a Trap Shooter & the Choke & load are against me? I really want to reload the hulls with 7/8 or 15/16 oz to see the way the 16 Ga was famous. Thanks.

The 7 1/2 shot is better for the modified choke, over the 6 shot.

Shoot fast and cover the bird as its rising .

If your a good shot, 20 or more. It wont be the gun or loads fault.

I blame misses on the wind.

for sh*ts and giggels i shot a round of 16yrd trap with my browning BT-100 with a imp-cylinder choke and shot a 22-25, but you have to shoot pretty fast. eastbank.

I have been loading all my 12 gauge shells with 7/8oz loads, still breaking mostly straights in skeet and 22-24's in trap with an occasional 25 thrown in. Nothing fast or fancy, 8's at about 1175fps.

You should do fine at trap. The 16 gauge is responsible for killing a zillion
game birds, maybe two zillion. If you are going to the trap range use #8s
after you shoot up the stuff you have.

Enjoy your gun. Several times a year I will shoot 16 yard trap with my BPS .410. Using my 11/16 reloads of 7 1/2, 20-22 is very possible, hard lefts kill me on stations 4 and 5 tho. I never shoot tighter than IM at 27 yard shooting either 1 or 1 1/8 oz 12 gauge trap loads.

I shoot trap with 16ga 1 oz #8 reloads mod choke, skeet with 16 ga 1 oz #9 IC choke, and sporting clays with a combo of the 2.

You should have no problem shooting one ounce loads. The bird does not know what gauge it is. Lots of fellows shoot one ounce loads from their 12 gauge.
You are shooting a field gun. Those tend to shoot flat; the advice to cover the bird is good. About shooting fast.....what you want is to shoot at the bird while it is still rising. You have plenty of time to do that....just don't take it all.
Try patterning the gun before Trap. A few shells at 35-40 yards will tell you a lot.

You wouldn't do bad at all!

I can do pretty good with a 7/8 oz 12 gauge mod. choke. I don't shoot trap super often, but when I do, I like to shoot quite a few rounds. So after 200 rounds of 1-1/8 12 gauge, I was out of commission for like 3 days. So I went with a lot of 7/8 and it's much more tolerable over the long haul.

My point being, don't think you're handicapped with a 16ga w/ 1oz. You're not. I'm not sure about the intricacies of how the smaller bore diameter may affect patterns, etc, but give it a go!

I will say this. My 20 gauge single shot w/ 3/4 oz really tested my skills. Can't imagine pulling this off with any setup:

That is a good "do all" shotgun. FWIW, many of the guys I shoot trap with are shooting 7/8-1 oz loads of 7.5 or 8, ( Myself included) Your not handicapped there. As for the modified choke, I have broken 25/25 with a Bt99 w fixed modified choke. As mentioned above, you just need to get on the birds a little quicker with a modified choke and lighter loads.
Bottom line: You should have no problem getting up over the 20/25 hump IF the gun fits you.
As with most shooting sports, practice is the key,

Use your No 7 1/2. An ounce is plenty.
ATA and many individual ranges do not allow anything larger because it will carry out of their shot fall area.

Had my best year ever at trap after dropping down to one ounce of eights. In a full choke 12. Yours should do fine. Make a rib from aluminum bar from Menards held on with two sided tape for a better sighting plane and have stir.

An ounce of shot is plenty, most regular trap shooters shoot one ounce or less, at least for practice. Basically you will be throwing the same amount of shot as most of the other shooters.
I would go with your 7 1/2 shot tho. 6's can carry too far, and 6's are not a legal load for trap. 7 1/2 is the largest shot size for trap.
