Years ago I loaned my Lyman Lubrisizer to a friend who never returned it. In fairness, I moved away and never even thought to ask him to return it.

I found a used "San Diego" Star lubrisizer online, and purchased it. It was pretty frozen up, from years of disuse. After cleaning and oiling, it freed up nicely.

I'd guess I might have $50 to $75 more into the setup than I would have had in a new Lyman, but the tool is much easier to use than the Lyman. Granted I'm not installing gas checks or the like, which might be a bit easier on the Lyman.

If you are on the fence and thinking of a new cast bullet lube/sizing tool, give the Star a good look. It is really easy to use, and a quality tool.

I own six of the Star machines, plus two Saeco, one Lyman 45, one Lyman 450 and one RCBS sizer/lubricator. By far the Star machines are superior, especially when it comes to volume sizing and lubricating. I've added bullet feeders to three of my Star machines, and other than the time it takes to fill bullet tubes, it's nothing to size a thousand bullets in an hour's time.

Hope this helps.

Been using my home made BPCR lube and it works well. The sizer, once set up, squirts grease only where needed. Great machine. Replacement dies are comparatively expensive, but the machine does a good job.

I buy my dies from Chris Smith on the castboolits.com forum. He'll make them to your specifications and his turnaround is really quick. I've ordered several from him with just one set of lube holes for a specific bullet. That way I don't have to worry about plugging the spare holes with lead shot. You can specify where you want the holes located, too.

All my Star machines have heaters, since I use hard lubes and bulk packaging. I get no leading with the Magma lube, so I just stick with it for most of my bullets. My other brands of machines are set up with softer lubes for specialty bullets and gas check seating.

Here's a link for Chris Smith: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?34499-Star-dies-that-I-make

Hope this helps.

That's the guy I bought the die, punch, and die remover tool from. I measured the overall length of the bullet, and the location of the grease groove, and voila! Perfection. I do not yet have any Star dies from Magma.

The lube I use is pretty soft, so I haven't felt the need for a heater.

Thanks for the heads up!

Once I got used to setting the punch the rite depth the Lymans are reserved for checked rifle boolits now .

Check out Randy Rats or White Labels lubes , I`ve yet beat there performance or prices !!
I live on the coastal plains of NC so I lean to the stiffer lubes. I use a lot of Carnauba Red from White Label & Randy Rats TAC X with excellent results, both in the barrel & on paper.

I've been using Red Rooster which is a hard lube, out here in So. Nevada where it gets pretty darn hot. I've got 2 Lyman , one has a heater from Midway and the other I use a soft lube. For my rifle cartridges I use a gas check.
