Any problems likely to result from free floating a heavy barrel on a 10/22? Is the reciever sturdy enough?

The receiver was designed to "float" on the 10/22. The barrel should be supported on two points, just forward of the action screw and at the end of the stock. You will screw up a perfectly good gun freefloating a barrel on a 10/22. I would not recommend it.

Rimfires seem to like a bit of support at the tip of the fore-end anyway.

floating a heavy bbl is likely to droop the thin aluminum receiver over time.

Thats what I was worrying about. What do you mean float the reciever, that sounds sloppy? I'm going to go read up on rimfire central now.

If you bed just the action then the barrel will droop.

If you bed just the barrel then you might not get good accuracy.

I bed the rear of the action, the front of the action, and the first 2-3 inches of the barrel near the action.
You have to bed at least some of the barrel or add a second action screw to the rear of the reciever.

Rimfirecentral is a great place.
