10/22 jamming

My 10/22 is trying to eject the empty casing while loading a new round. Doesnt happen every time I pull the trigger but atleast once or twice during a 30 round magazine. Any ideas? And my gun is clean. I field strip after every time I shoot it. Thanks for your help.

The most common cause for something like this is crud built up in the chamber or on the bolt, but you've got that covered already, so the next most likely cause is underpowered ammo; give another brand a try and see if it happens more or less often.

May be bad magazines or ammo. That's a bit vague, but my 10/22 jammed like crazy until I cleaned my magazines or bought new ones. How many rounds have you had through them?

While dirt or faulty magazines might very well be your problem, I think it would be a good idea to replace you extractor with either a Power Custom A-2 Sharp Claw Extractor or Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor.

Your problem is not that the "10/22 is trying to eject the empty casing while loading a new round."

Your problem is it is failing to eject the empty case, period.

For whatever reason, the ejector is not knocking the empty out at full bolt travel.

Try different ammo.
Try the factory 10-round magazine.
Check for a broken ejector.
Check for loose barrel clamp screws.
Check for anything keeping the bolt from moving freely all the way to the rear.
Check for a broken or chipped extractor.
Or gummed up/dirty extractor.

This jamming started after the second time I shot my brand new rifle. The first time I shot it I field stripped it. Then the second time I shot it, it started to jam. I've sent about 1400 rounds down range.

SO, it worked fine until you took it apart and put it back together?
That might be a clue right there!

Anyway, it's under factory warranty.

Send it back to Ruger and let them fix it.

How long is it under waranty? I've had it now for about 2 months.

Ruger has an "Implied warrenty" with no set time limit.

Call them and whine and they will send you a call tag.

10-22 jamming....

My guess would be the 30 round magazine is the culprit. If it feeds OK with the factory 10 rounders I would be convinced of it. Also I don't think Ruger would honor their warranty with anything but factory magazines....

You may want to read this. If it started after take down pay attention to the part about "Hammer Strut Assembly" reassembled with the 'slot' of the "Retaining Washer" facing down; it must face UP...! ! This one has gotten me before.

30 round magazine is a big clue here. Very few are up to snuff. Go back to the factory 10 rounder to confirm. If it works, there is your problem.

Replace your 10-22 with a Mod. 60, and your jamming problems will be solved!

I had a similar problem with my 10/22 once. It turned out to be a buildup of crud aroung the extractor, but that was after a few thousand rounds. If yours started happening to a new rifle, I would take a close look at the extractor, as stated to make sure its not chipped or broken.

If the above suggestions don't work take out the bolt and make sure that your scope mounting screws are not dragging on top of the bolt and slowing it down. If the screws are only slightly too long this can happen and cause you fits with jams. I know cause I have been there!
