I got a stainless/synthetic 10/22 about 15 years ago and never did anything to it, until about 2 years ago I got the itch.
I bought a hornet products "plinker special" drop-in trigger assembly, to lower the trigger pull to a nice crisp 3.5 lbs. I really like mine...check them out
here. For only $90 it is a great deal. They have other options too, all the way down to 2.5 lbs, but I thought for a plinker that 3.5 lbs would be perfect. It cut my trigger weight in half probably.
My buddy bought a 10/22 more recently (a few months ago) and the trigger was horrible...way worse than my stock trigger ever was. I don't know what the lawyers have done, but it was long, heavy, not crisp, just terrible. If yours is anything like his, a new trigger will be the absolute FIRST thing to do.
I also bought a tapco intrafuse stock, along with a vertical foregrip and bipod and sling. Put a 3-9x32mm Simmons scope...it works pretty decent.
I have one of the Ruger bx-25 mags. It works fine, but I have had fewer jams out of my butler creek "steel lips" mag. They are usually the same price (+/-), the only disadvantage is they have the clear plastic which isn't as aesthetic to me, and they cannot be disassembled to clean, however I have never really needed to clean mine after probably 5 or 10,000 rounds.
