10-22 rifle

Have been looking for a good used 10-22 at local pawn shops. Found one today that has a wood stock with checkering, stainless and the barrel is 22 1/2 inches long instead of the normal 18 1/2 inches. It looks like this one except for the longer barrel. The gun almost seems bigger overall than a regular 10/22, is it a special version, can anybody tell me?

What you have there is a "Wally-World Special." They're only availabe through Wal-Mart, (or used of course). Other than the longer barrel, and the DSP (delux sporter) type hardwood stock, they're no different than any other 10/22, just a lot nicer looking.

Here's mine. My wife's actually. Scope is a cheap Bushnell, 4x.



Now, Ruger does make a version of the DSP, 10/22 with a SS barrel, and a walnut stock for Davidson's, I understand, but as far as I know, that has an 18 1/2 in barrel, the same as the blued DSP. If the stock is the lighter hardwood, it's a WWS.

Now, you mentioned that it felt "bigger." I've noticed, and I don't know why, but the stock on our WWS feels "thicker" especially through the pistol grip area. Or maybe the walnut one feels thinner. I'm not sure why that's so. It coule be that walnut is stronger maybe? Or just that it's a difference in the year of manufacture. The blue one was made in 1997 the SS one in 2006.

Thanks for the info, i didn't pick it up right away, wanted to learn more about it. Most of the used 10/22's I found were $150.00 to $200.00, This one they are asking $225.00 but I bet they would take less if I had the cash in hand. I think I'll go back and negotiate today.

In addition to CajunBass' good info the DSP (Deluxe Sporter) model has been part of the Ruger line since 1964. It is walnut ...the WW Special is less expensive and less desirable birch. The DSP traditionally came in blue or SS 18" barrel while the WW Spec comes with the 22" SS.
Other than noted the guns are identical.
Historically there have been several issues of guns known as WW Specials as a result of deals struck back in the early 90's between Bill Ruger and Sam Walton.
They are available for a relatively short time and then gone. I believe New WW Specials from Walmart are no longer available.
The 90's version was a gray/black laminated stock w SS barrel in 18" complete with dedicated Ruger sling in Black and Ruger logo red.
I managed to snag a couple of those guys and have never regretted it.

The WWS as we know it today is still availabe through Wal-Mart, or was the last time I was in one a few weeks ago. Like the rest of the 10/22 it has undergone some changes that at the lest don't make the rifle as attractive. The trigger assembly is plastic, as are all other 10/22's AFAIK, and the barrel is now either a matte finish SS, or some type of spray on finish, I'm not sure which. The last price I noticed for one NIB was $238.00.

I like the look of the lighter hardwood stock with the "white" stainless steel barrel. The darker blue looks best on the darker walnut IMHO.

Those are great 10/22's, they are more accurate than any other model of 10/22 that I have shot, they actually feel like a real rifle also. $225 is a good price.

Thanks. 'Preciate it. That's the Rapadan River in the background. It's supposed to be a good smallmouth bass river. I've never fished it but I see canoe parties float by all the time. The picture is deceptive. It's a pretty good drop down the hill to the river.

But you're right. It's not a bad place to live. The Lord truly blessed us when he led us here.

I've considered buying one of the stainless wm stainless specials. I like it because it does not have the barrel band which in some cases reduces the accuracy of the rifle. Get it.
