Went to the gunshop yesterday

On my new SU16 Alpha. Yeah, I figured it was time to buy my own. ;)

I got the Alpha Model because I wanted the longer barrel, and I will just change the sites out with the Bravo model. After looking at the sights again, they are really dorky! lol. So the first mod will be Bravo sights. But I got a really good deal... IMO. It was $439 for the gun, $470 after tax, and $495.80 out the door!

The gun had been fired before. He said it has about 50 rounds through it. One of the local Police officers actually bought in late December and they never went through with the transaction... for reasons I don't know. But they did go shoot it. ah well, who cares. It's still "new" so I get the KT warrenty, and that's all that I really care about. They ran a 30rd AR mag, and the stock 10 rounders through it and he said it worked great.

I won't be able to pick it up in 10 days, but more like 20, so I won't get to shoot it till end of Feb sometime. I'm so excited. I hate the 10 day wait, I'm all excited, pay money, then go home and sit! grrrr!

He also has a Norico SKS there for sale. I saw it when I got the Kel Tec and it was pretty nice. I wouldn't say great condition, but very good condition. It still has the cleaning kit, but lacks the bayonet and the cleaning rod. He said he'd find me a cleaning rod. Anyway, I didn't think I'd do it so I left. But then I heard the SKS calling my name. Like sirens to a sailor. So, 4 hours later I was back at the gun store buying the SKS. :) I may find a bayonet for it, and I'm gonna put it in a Choat stock, I like black guns. I may have the wood stock refinished and put on, but we'll see. Anyway... $175 out the door for the SKS, and 300rds of ammo and 3 stripper clips.

Good prices IMO. I'm pretty happy. And very anxious to go shooting!

I went back to my home town. He's a guy that does business out of his garage. I went in just to buy the SU, but the Norinco was so nice. The rinco's have chromed barrels right? Then he showed me his SKS with a choat stock and I loved it. He also got everything "hard chromed." I have no idea what that is, but it looked cool! Looked like it was stainless. Anyway I want that... who would you go to for something like that. I asked him and he said it was done many years ago and he forgot exactly who did it.

I was debating wether I should get the SU or the SKS. I chose the SU, then I remembered Duke of Lawnchair's advice to just get both. So I did. :p

For sure.

There is a range out by Inyokern right? I've only heard of it (a friend and I rolled a car on Brown road and two guys coming from the "range" helped us.) but I've never actually been to a rifle range, I just go in the desert, find a backstop, and shoot.

Did some more spending today...

For the SKS:
Choate Conventional stock
Williams Fire sight
US made Gas Piston (for the 922 compliance so I can mount the bayonet)
US made operating rod (for the 922 compliance so I can mount the bayonet)
Bayonet with all mounting hardware
Cleaning rod (it was missing)

The only thing I need to make it 922 compliant is a new US made mag. Tapco makes a 5rounder, but I don't want a 5 round mag. And to keep in Cali legal it has to be under 10rounds. BUT, if I get a 30rd mag I'm illegal in Cali, but not federal. :p I'll just flee the state then. j/k.

For the SU16:
Bravo model, AR style sights.

I'll post pics when I get the guns and all the cool stuff on um. :)

Justang, are you going to send your SU-16 off to the factory to have the sights installed or are you going to have someone local do it? I was going to send mine off to the factory, but with the new handguard for it coming out soon I have decided to wait and see if that is something else they can install when I send mine off to have the Bravo sights installed.

You guys are making me want an SKS!!!

You all are making me want an SKS Paratrooper!

I'd like to find one with decent wood, put those hitech peep sights on it and have the trigger done.

That would be the makings of a nice carbine!

I was gonna do it all myself. It doesn't look that hard. But if for some reason I don't think I'm able to do it, I'll take it to the local gunsmith.

Something like this, KarbineKrazy? ;)

The Para-SKS is a good rifle. The 16" barrel makes the SKS handle more like a Mini-14 , rather than an M-1.

I just need to sell the bayonet and scope so I can buy those Tech-Sights.

yep! That's what I'm thinking, throw a set of peep sights on there and you have one heck of a rifle.

My dad has an SKS w/ a folder on it, I think I might talk him into to putting the better sights and a trigger job into it.
