I'm looking to find a 1000 yard range in the CT area. I'm intrested to see if any one knows of any public/private range or even private property where the owner may allow someone to shoot on the property. I am a law enforcement officer and was told some military bases allow officers to use certain ranges. Anything within a 2 or 3 hour drive of New Haven CT would be great. If anyone knows of any such range please let me know. Thanks

Welcome scuba...I honestly don't know why I looked at the thread (as I have no intentions to travel to Connecticut), but I am looking to build my own 1000+ yd. range pretty soon...anyway welcome to THR, Mav. :)

CT native as well.

There are no public ranges that are even remotely close to that range that I am aware of in CT or Ma. 400 is the longest I know of in CT, and that is unique, the rest are 200ish or less.

There may be some private land/non-club place that the land owner may allow that kind of shooting on, but I don't know any personally. There are corn/hay fields up here in the NW corner where there are legit 800+ yd shots across fields/valleys with hills behind them and no houses, but you'd need to figure out who owns them and ask.

Bell city rifle club seems to be the place where high power rifle/benchrest shooting has the most activity in CT, if you show up there for a few matches and make some friends you may get lucky.

Also, another place to ask would be in the "Hometown/New England" section of ar15.com.

I've lived in both CT and MA and the longest range I ever belonged to was 300 yards. I'll ask my brother if he knows of any the next time I speak to him though. He's a shooter as well and he is still up there.

You might give the NRA a call. If there's a range that long I'm sure they'd know about it.

Take a left, go about 400 miles to Camp Perry, Ohio. The army has Fort Drum, NY. Now seriously, the nra would be who I would contact for info. What do you plan on shooting with that you need such a long range? Also, what will be used as a target? 1,000 yards is a far ways, we shoot bulleye target, the bull itself is nearly 2 foot circle if not bigger.

If the link doesn't work, it is the northeastshooters bulletin board, rifle competition forum. There is a list of sites as follows:

Hampden, ME. 600 Yards
Scarborough, ME. 600 Yards
Nashua, NH. 600 Yards
EAFR - Jericho, VT. 600 Yards
Reading, MA. 600 Yards
Colonie, NY. 1000 Yards
Camp Smith - Peekskill, NY. 600 Yards
Millville, NJ. 600 Yards
New Holland, PA. 600 Yards
Bridgeville, DE. 600 Yards
FT. Meade, MD. 600 Yards

That gives you one 1000yd site to check out in Colonie, NY. (Never heard of it, myself.)

Several of those mentioned are military bases.

The one in Colonie NY (Albany area) might be a military arms factory.

How are you going to access those?

Oh, you want access? Damned if I know.

I pointed him in the direction of some people who can answer his question definitively. That's the best I can do.

Military bases do allow LE agencies to use their ranges but to my experience it's not that you just show up and they let you use the range. First, your agency has to sign a training agreement which includes a lot of things including a hold harmless contract. There is usually a fee involved and it's like a couple hundred bucks a day.

That's been my experience. Others may differ.
