I understand your pain, but if you were a member of Tacpro then you know they have a 1000 yard range; whereas, you state in post #21 "tacpro is 200."

pdd, I tried to call VX yesterday. No luck. Got a fast busy signal..... I will call again next week. I can't find the membership price again. If I remember correctly, it was $1300 per year maybe? Total? With courses? I spoke with them a while back. The range looks great in pics online.
I spoke with a trainer at Jacobs as well. I don't know where I got the idea that Jacobs was 9000 miles away. It is actually 1.25 hours drive per Google. Not bad.

I shot a lot at ORSA when I lived in Knoxville tn. Cool place, most folks there were friendly. I never got a membership but would have...I was lucky enough to have coworkers take me as a guest several times.

Does Jacob's have shaded shooting positions? I have to have shade. Medical stuff involved.
Jacobs also said I could test a few other scopes. They will let me shoot with my current scope. I want to avoid buying a scope that I won't use. I doubt the scope sellers would be as flexible on a $1k exchange as they have been on a $300.00 + - scopes.
I shot indoors today. Pistols and 25 yard offhand ar15 are are fun as well.

At tacpro, only the 1000 yard line is shaded. The other yard lines are open.
Tacpro is set up a little weird with only one row of targets. This means that if someone wants to shoot 300, 400, or 500. Everyone has to shoot those ranges. You could always bring your own shade. Tacpro also has benches to shoot from, on the big range, but I've never seen anyone use them.
Jacobs is set up differently. Everyone shoots from one line. They have 20-30 some targets set out over 4 shooting lanes. You can shoot at 100, and the guy next to you can shoot any other available target. They have a portable canopy if you really need it.
Whether I'm shooting at the ranch, Tacpro, or Jacob's, I always bring a floppy wide brimmed hat, long pants, and a long shirt. Who needs a canopy if you are all covered up anyways.

Amen, brother. If I waited for the perfect conditions to shoot in, I wouldn't shoot much at all. Rain, 105 degrees, sleet, windy as hell, etc, etc. You just have to suck it up and go shoot.
Besides, perfect conditions are boring. It's easy to make hits at long range when you get comfortable. I get a real sense of pride with first round hits in windy and nasty conditions.
Here in Yuma, AZ just 12 miles outside of town we have a multi sport range named Adair Range. The best part it is FREE to the public. It includes a 1000 yard range that is not covered and if those who want to shoot at a shorter distance are at the range first, then everyone has to shoot at that distance. It works out as everyone tries to accommodate the desires of the different shooters, and not hog the range all to themselves. The other ranges from metallic gong to black powder and small bore are covered with benches etc. I know I am spoiled by having a great facility that is FREE.

Only free range I have access to is at the family cattle ranch. It's a 3 1/2 hour drive each way. It's rare that much shooting gets done, though. Always some work to do at the ranch.
I can't complain, I get year round hog hunting opportunities.

In Grandfield, OK (just the other side of the state line from Wichita Falls, TX), there is Badlands Tactical Training Facility, which is a sniper school that has a range with steel silhouettes to 1000. If you take one of their classes, you can use their range any time they aren't running a class on it. www.badlandstactical.net
Henchman, that looks like a great range. The range trip would make for a total of 5 hours drive time though. Might have to see if a casino/hotel is close. Their website is acting up. Do they let you pay and shoot, or do you have to take a class that would make for 2 trips before using the long ranges?
