Hi. I just bought this product, but haven't yet opened the package:

http://www.ssi-online.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.ViewProductDetail&categoryid=18&itemid=201

They work like a hearing aid. The package says that it has "noise suppression at 105 db". But I'm concerned that 105 is still too much noise and dangerous perhaps (assuming they even work as advertised). The last thing I need is for my ears to be blown out by my rifle when hunting. I've had some full size muffs that cut out at 85 db, a full 20 db less, and they did work fine, but since noise increases exponentially with db level increase, 20 seems like a LOT more. But I'm not an expert on noise & db levels. And they're not a known name (SSi), so it might be of questionable collectibility any right to sue if their product is defective. So does anyone know:

A) Do these work? and
B) How much is 105 db - seems like it might be too much to comfortably tolerate. But perhaps not at all - I just dunno.

Mainly question A is the most important. I'll be testing them with .22s first, but I don't even want to try that if it's going to amplify, rather than suppress, the report from a .22lr.

It's weird - here you have a product sold as a "game-stalker" with an outline of an elk on the package, which says "noise suppression at 105 db". Thus, clearly they are contemplating that you might shoot a high power rifle with them in place. However, this little gem is on their website, but conspiciously ABSENT from the packaging: "*Not to be used as a noise suppression device"

WTH? Seems like they want to have their cake and eat it too. Anyone know whether this company is established, respectable, etc.??

It almost seems like they are running with the assumption that people who order online are going to be sophisticated enough to sue them if the product damages their hearing; hence the legal weaseling warning on the website. But that people wandering around retail stores, OTOH, are not so sophisticated; hence the lack of this warning on the package. I bought this at Academy Sports, and this company's products are also found at both WalMart and BassProShops - these are huge chains obviously. Very strange - am I correct to be this cynical? I mean, either they ARE or are NOT designed to WORK as a noise suppression device. And if they are, they'd sure as hell better work, given the damage that can be done.

Thanks.

105 dB is like the wife yelling in your ear at a distance of 2 feet. So it's pretty loud and quite annoying. It's always a Tylenol moment for me.

This more clearly means you shouldn't use it to saw wood, cut bricks with a wet saw, jackhammer concrete, etc ... you know ... construction stuff.

Well, first, noise levels above 85 db are damaging in a cumulative fashion. Gunfire probably 120 db or higher from a hp rifle. I think jet engines are about 110 db. Muffs would help, but would not be good for a steady diet. I always try to use muffs and plugs when shooting rifles to keep the level as low as possible. You can still get damage with one type that only reduces levels by 25-30 db. Heck, just get a pair of the type on beam that hang on your neck and put them on when needed is my opinion. Deer aren't usually snap shots anyway. My hearing is so bad that I couldn't hear a deer anyway, so I will just wear plugs all the time. I can't afford to lose any more. In addition, the constant whining in my head is annoying. Don't want it any worse.
