Hi,

I'm going to work up a 10mm load using 165g JHP. I have Power Pistol and Blue Dot. Lyman's 49th shows a max for Power Pistol as 8.7 for 165 TMJ. However, Alliant shows max for the same weight as 10. I expect some variance, but that seems to be a fairly large jump.

Same for Blue Dot. Lyman says max is 10.2, Alliant says 11.5.

Very curious.

I've used Blue Dot before, but Power Pistol seems to have limited data available.

Anyway, I have data as follows:

Sierra 165 Gr. JHP- 9.3 - 11.0 grs. Blue Dot
No Power Pistol data found

Nosler 170 gr. JHP - 9.5 - 10.5 grs Blue Dot
No Power Pistol data found

Hornady has a Power Pistol charge for a 155 gr. and for the 180 gr. as follows:
155 gr JHP - Power Pistol 8.4 -10.0 grs. - Blue Dot 10.2 - 12.9 grs
180 gr. JHP - Power Pistol 6.8 - 8.4 grs. - Blue Dot 7.5 - 10.7 grs.

Alliant
170 gr. JHP - Power Pistol N/A - Blue Dot 10.1 grs. ( reduce 10% for start charge)
180 gr. JHP - Power Pistol 8.7 grs.

That's about all I have for 10mm right there. But as long as you approach the load with common sense and start with a published start charge, you'll be fine. When you have conflicting data like that, with a load your not yet seasoned with, just pick the lower charge and work up from there. You'll never go wrong with a safe work up process, it pays off.

I use power pistol with a 165 rnfp. 8.5 grains is a nice accurate load that gives around 1180 fps. I've gone up to 9.5 with no problems.

One of my favorite 10mm loads is 10.9 grns of Blue Dot with a 165 grn JHP. I use cci300 primers and 1.56 COL. Excellent accuracy and a good fun shooter.

Mostly I shoot those out of my 1911's. They are a Dan Wesson and a Les Baer 1911 format guns.

I put my hot loads in the 610, Witness hunter or the G20.

If you quoting the listed data from Alliant's recipe page. you will also find on the page where you click that you agree to follow the data as per their recommendation, that they say to reduce all listed loads by 10% except those which are marked TARGET for 38's and 45ACP. If you go back to that page it is just above the I Agree button.

Once you drop the charge weights they are a bit more inline with other data.

I started at 9.3 and worked my way up to 11.0 grains loading 10 rounds per increment for 5 increments. If I start seeing excessive pressure signs at, for example 10.5gr, I'll know to stop there. I also ordered a Chronograph. I'll probably wait till it gets here and use it to track my velocities.

Don't forget to check the COAL used for the load listed. Sometimes you find that a higher charge was tested with a longer COAL, keeping the pressure within safe limits.

Personally if there is large discrepancy in data I always lean towards the manufacturers data. From my data, 165gr Sierra JHP with 9.8-10.0gr between 1.250-1.260" generally hovers around 1,300 fps +/- 10 fps from a 4.6" Glock 20.

Lee 2nd ed. Shows a starting load of 8.8 & max of 10.0 for power pistol. Min. O.A.L. of 1.225 with 165 grain XTP which is a JHP round.

BLUEDOT data for same bullet shows starting load of 10.1 max 11.5 compressed min O.A.L. 1.255

Hope it helps.
