10mm Ammunition Recomendations

I recently purchased a Glock 29, intending to use it as a wilderness carry gun and occasionally as a daily carry gun. I would appreciate any recommendations on ammunition from "full-house" loads for woods to "lighter" loads for daily carry. Also, any tips on reloading would be quite helpful. Thank you.

Don't bother buying any commercial ammo. Get a Dillon or Hornady press and start cranking out your own.

I think Glocktalk has a good 10mm reloading page.

Get an aftermarket barrel.

You can get 180s up to 1400 fps or so from a 4.5" barrel, but that's getting pretty outrageous. Around 1250fps is reasonable IMO.

Pow'R Ball

I initially purchased some Pow'R Ball ammunition at the same time I purchased the gun so as to have some hollow points handy. Does anyone know anything about them? I got them because they are supposed to be very reliable feeders and penetrators.

Corbon's pow'r ball is decent but lacks IMO in the velocity range. Their 135gr. moves ~1400fps which is 200fps slower than Doubletaps 135gr round. But it does have the ball in the end to alleviate any jams.

Doubletap makes 14 different loads for 10mm...the best 10mm available,Mike McNett is a wizard with the 10mm cartridge. I recommend you buy an aftermarket barrel from KKM or Lone Wolf for the full power loads as well as a 22lb recoil spring

Doubletap ammo, when I tested it, did not make the chrono results they market. It is twice as expensive as GA Arms 180 grain Gold Dot and in my testing, just about 60fps faster. I have tried all sorts of 10mm ammo, and I would suggest GA for normal carry and something from DoubleTap or BuffaloBore for deep woods. At least a 200 grain XTP but probably a hard cast bullet over 200 grains.

DoubleTap is, by all accounts that I have read, the best choice. My experience with their ammo is fairly limited, but I hear nothing but good.

Personally, I have had good luck with GeorgiaArms 10mm. Is it the cleanest? No. Has it ever jammed my Witness 10mm? No. Does it chrono pretty close to what the site claims? Yes.

I'll second 10Gr of Bluedot under a 180Gr Hornady XTP.

Not sure what your time is worth, but I can buy loaded new ammo from Georgia Arms about as cheap as I can buy components. They load in new starline brass, which gives you brass for future reloading. Their 180 grain load would qualify as a 'light' load in my mind.

For the wallop loads, handload or double tap.

CorBon 180 gr bonded core softpoints are very accurate in my G-20's, tho pricey. Double Tap in 200 gr XTP and 200 gr Beartooth are also fine woods rounds in 10mm. Norma does not make 10mm ammo any more. I have a moderate stash of their 170 gr JHP. It's pretty accurate, quite blasty even by 10mm standards. 175 gr Win silvertips make a good general purpose round and are probably the most widely available load. Georgia Arms works great for practice, and I use CCI Blazer to more closely replicate POI of the 200 gr Double Tap loads. Georgia Arms made a limited run of 200 gr Ranier HP's some time back, but they didn't last long. It was an upper-mid power load, quite accurate.

Is this really necessary? I have yet to hear of a Glock barrel/chamber explosion, crack, or the like. I have seen a bulged "C" model caused by a lodged, primer-fired bullet in the barrel. But never an issue with lack of "support".

Is there something I should know before I buy the G20 I am planning on buying. I would rather not replace a perfectly good factory barrel.

No, there is nothing to know. Glock factory barrels can shoot full power 10mm ammo. I would not replace the factory barrel. I had to because I bought a used "C" model and I had to get rid of those ports.

I've seen plenty of "Glock smiley's" on 10mm brass. My Witnesses have never done that no matter how hot I loaded them.

I have 2 G-20's, one a 2004 manuf. and one a 2005. Never had any kind of smiley w/anything I've shot. Faint hint of a bulge, but nothing more.
