I started a 10mm vs deer thread over on TFL .
This evening I rolled in from work and saw a doe casually eating the tops off our Fraser Fir. I drove on past as not to spook her. I got my Glock 20 and walked back up the drive.
It has been raining for nearly 2 weeks here almost constantly, tonight was no exception. The falling rain made it possible for me to get 26 paces from her before she saw me. I wasn't sure whether or not to shoot since her rear was facing me and I have never shot a deer with a pistol.
Luckily, I was right behind a fencepost, it gave me a decent rest. I was about to just scare her away when she turned and gave me a perfect broadside. I aimed for a lung/shoulder shot and fired. She dropped immediately and began to flop a bit. I finished her with a 22 short since I did not want to upset the elderly on our property any more.
I am disappointed with my placement since the round went just aft of the shoulder blades and through the spine. I would have preferred a more humane hit. But, I realize that I am lucky not to have to track her in the rain. Fish and Game came and picked her up, he told me there was a housebound old timer who was excitedly aniticipating good eating for the week.
I used ProLoads 180g Gold dot from a factory Glock barrel, factory night sights. The bullet made a larger than caliber entry and nickel sized exit. I used a SOG Seal pup knife for the cleaning and highly recommend it to anyone who needs a working knife that also might be used for deer cleaning. The serrations made short work of the ribs.

Thanks for the post!

Looks like that sort of settles the issue of adequacy for the 10mm with that load. Breaking the spine and still exiting is a good job.

A couple of years ago, I killed a buck with a Glock 29 using Georgia Arms 155 grain Gold Dots. GA claims 1375 fps. Broadside shot from about 30 yards using a rest. I hit the buck in the middle of the neck about 3 inches in front of his shoulders. The bullet exited. He ran about 50 yards. I've had deer run further after a diagonal shot from the shoulder and out of the short ribs with a .300 Win Mag.

Strange thing. One of his antlers was broken off from the skull. The bone at the base of the antler was actually gone. You could see down into the spongy sinus bone tissue. It was not infected and had dried out.
