Im thinking about getting a 10mm. Now I know nobody on this board would try to talk me out ofbuyibg a gunt but for just arguments sake I already have 9mm, 40s&w, 357 sig and 45 in my safe.

is there something about the 10mm that will make me smile when I shoot it or will it be my usual big smile just in a different caliber?

And who makes a good 10mm in the 400-=500 hundred dollar range. Could be used so give me both new and used options.

I really enjoyed the 10mm I had, I just didn't enjoy finding ammo I could afford!
That said, I'm on the fence about getting another 10mm pistol to replace the one I sold. If you like the 40, you'll LOVE the 10mm!

You already have a .40S&W? Oh dear, this is very serious.

When - not if - you get into reloading, you'll be able to use the same dies and bullets for 10mm as .40S&W (and of course the same primers and powder). Just have to adjust the ol' press and use different brass. So you see, you don't have a choice ... you have to get one. It's out of your hands.

I don't know where you will find one in the 4-500 dollar range. G29's are running about 5 and change I think.

Check out Georgia Arms for 10mm ammo at reasonable prices.

The 10mm takes a Large Pistol Primer. 10MM Witness is under $500.Some say it is the most reliable of all Witness pistols.
10mm acts more like a true Magnum than a hot .40.

It is a handloader's dream cartridge.

SW1076

Fixed Sights: $360.00
Night Sights: $380.00

I was quoted these prices 2 days ago. Said they still had plenty of them in stock. These are used police trade-ins. Many feel, 10mm fans or not, that they are some of the finest autos Smith ever made.

I'd like to know who makes factory loaded 10mm ammo like it used to be. I understand alot of the 10mm nowadays is just like a hot .40. Or "10mm lite" (FBI loads)

They are good guns. I bought one here for $400. Aging Novak type nights and 3 mags. The decocker and bobbed hammer were not to my liking. The gun was 100 % reliable with both factory and
handloads. I compared the Witness with the Smith. I liked the
CZ75 design better.

The only factory ammo i've used that was loaded to .40 levels
were the Federal 180 gr Lead and the Federal 180 gr Hydra-Shok.
JHPs like the 175 gr Silvertip will get your attention.

Good luck with your 10mm purchase.

10 x 10MM, it's all you need:)

I've got my G29 carry rig up for sale in the 'For Sale' forum here on the boards. I'm financing a new project and broke, or I wouldn't be selling it. 10mm is WAY COOL.

michiganfan,

In the price range you quoted, the 1076 is the best choice. KY has plenty, and mine from there is one of my favorite pistols. It is accurate, handles the 10mm very well even in hot loads, and will feed anything including empty cases. At $360 you can get the gun, some mags, and 500 rounds of ammo from Georgia Precision while remaining under your $500 cap. If my 1076 is any indicator these guns were caried plenty and shot little. You will have a heck of a shooter for not much change.

I have the Glock 29, very nice gun. I got it for $490 shipped, then payed $20 for the FFL transfer.

I find it to be very shootable, the recoil is not near as bad as it is made out to be, very controllable. I find it a tad stronger than +P loads out of my Kimber Pro Carry and H&K USP 45C.

I like the 10 so much, I have a Dan Wesson Razorback on order.

I am also looking at the KY Imports 1076 and 1066. Anyone with experience with both, which is the better??

"...factory loaded 10mm ammo like it used to be."

Maybe this will help:

Texas Ammo;

ProLoad;

Georgia Arms;

CorBon.

1076 vs 1066.

You really can't go wrong here, as they're both the same 4.25"-size pistols. It just depends on which decocker type you're comfortable with. The 1076 employs a frame-mounted, Sig-style decocker (no safety). The 1066 uses the same slide-mounted decocker/safety unit as the 5" 1006. Otherwise, they should handle and shoot the same.

HTH. :)

I have to agree. A friend of mine got one of these as soon as the FBI turned theirs in. (Brother is an agent) He loves his! This is an outstanding price also.

10mm Rant

Well, the beloved 10...uh, make that beloved by a small crowd of hunters, handloaders, and those that like to hunt for a long time for and pay a large sum for ammo.

The market, like it or no, left the 10mm behind a LONG time ago. I remember when many manufacturers made a 10.
Can you name more than three (readily) today?

Is it fun to shoot? Sure, so is my .44 Magnum. It is just not as easy to control as a .45, .40, .357 Sig, etc. and it HAMMERS the weapon with every shot.

If I were hell-bent on buying one, I would go with one of Glock's 10mm models, however.

I just don't have need nor the time to fool with it...

I asked myself, a long time ago, "do I really need this many calibers?" I concluded that I do not. Guess what? I have become a much better shot with the guns I still own!

I have more than one but I recall a phrase about how one should beware the man with only one gun. I sure would!

Rant end...

Well JMag, if you're looking to downsize I'd say get rid of everything EXCEPT the 10mm. In an autoloader the 10mm covers more ground (in both bullet weight and power) than any other cartridge. THAT is what makes the 10mm so great!

Off the top of my head...10mm mfgs. current...Dan Wesson, Glock, Smith & Wesson. Kimber supposed to put one out later this year. Also available from several custom and semi-custom manufacturers...

"Can you name more than three [10mms] today?"

:rolleyes: Sure, chumpy.

As far as being currently produced and sold:

S&W 610 10mm revolver;

Glock's 20 & 29;

Tanfaglio Witness, fullsize & compact;

Dan Wesson Razorback;

Supposedly Kimber is considering chambering it's 1911 in 10mm (which, after DW, would be the 2nd domestically-manufactured 10mm autoloader to hit the U.S. market since the early 90s).

As far as generally still available, sometimes NIB:

Colt Delta Elite;

Colt Double Eagle;

6 versions of S&W's 10XX-series pistols (e.g., 1006, 1076);

various others.

".... and those that like to hunt for a long time for and pay a large sum for ammo."

Not at all. In point of fact, extremely affordable 10mm ammo can be found here:

www.georgia-arms.com

$180 for a 1000-rds of ammo isn't a "large sum," at 18-cents per round.

This does, of course, require that you have access to a phone, a valid credit card, and a shippable street address, which, I guess, can be a stretch for some people. :rolleyes:

No one disputes my point that 10mm is mostly an afterthought these days, at least if what is on the shelf is an indicator.

Sorry I didn't qualify my earlier post as three semiautos that readily come to mind. The DW is a new product, it probably won't be made very long, IMHO.

I thought S&W was long out of the 10mm market. Okay, cool, there's a wheelie.

Tangfolio, well, I meant REAL guns.

Glock has two models, counts as one in my book!

Swell, you like 10s, I don't have a need and I still don't think most folks do. Even the now-weaker link (.40 or greater)in the magnum chain, the .44, is eclipsed by the .480, .454, .500 S&W. As I recall it, the 10mm in its prime approximates .41 Mag (basically dead, too)ballistics. Again, what's the appeal?

Machismo???

Just a rant from me. I always wanted a Bren-Ten!

JMag:banghead:

Rant on brother!

Nothing wrong with ranting. We're just trying to seduce you to the "Dark Side."

There are quite a few excellent cartridges available today, and many of them pretty much replicate one or more other cartridges. This raises the question of "why?" Well my answer would be, why not? Personally, I enjoy collecting, shooting and reloading for as many different calibers as possible. As for being more proficient with what you have when you have fewer, well I like to shoot all my guns for fun, but I practice and train with my S&W 1086 and my Ruger .30-06. I think what most 10mm fans like about the cartridge though is its versatility. Is the 10mm as easy to shoot as a .22 LR? No. Is the 10mm as powerful as the .454 Casull? No. But it does more jobs as well or better than a number of different calibers. With light "plinking" loads I can go to the range and shoot my G20 all day long and I can do it just about as cheaply as any other centerfire cartridge. Stoked with 175gn Silvertips or 155gn XTPs my 1086 makes an excellent CCW gun. Moving on to my 6.5" S&W 610 loaded with some hot 180gn or 200gn XTPs I can walk the deer/pig woods with complete confidence that if I can get a shot within my self-designated range then I'm going to be putting meat in the freezer. Additionally, in an autoloader a simple barrel swap can turn your 10mm into a .40 S&W, .357 Sig or 9x25mm Dillon. For me, this is the ultimate "do everything" semiauto pistol cartridge!

Come... join the Dark Side Jmag!

;)

Okay, you win!!!

Seriously, I will consider a used S&W 1006 (other iterations are available from the source) as my next purchase.

I once owned a Smith 4506 and a wish I never got rid of it.

It really bothered me when the Feds dumped the 10 in favor of the .40 Short & Wimpy (I know, I just had to). I suppose they had to to allow for the lowest common denominator.

The 10 makes more sense than the .40 S&W to me, anyway. Maybe it will rise again.

I was curious as to the loyalty factor from die-hards. I got it...
