12 ga blackpowder rb loads

Not RB, simply 'cause I have no mould. Do load slug/shot/oversized buck (.375 & .311 RB).

I've used both Pyrodex & Black, prefer the latter. Best patterning for shot, inclusive of the buck is around 75.0 gr's. Same for the slugs & I get a point of aim impact with those at 50 yards. You can load a good deal hotter, but in my experience you start to blow patterns after a certain point.

Gun's my Grandfathers old single w/a 30" bbl.. I've used modern plastic shells with WW red wads for the shot stuff as well as all brass cases with fiber and heavy card wads & overshot retainers. I give the brass cases a start crimp on my Mec 650 & then glue the overshot retainers with data written on each. Same with slugs & that brass case.

Plastics get a stock 8 point fold for shot......I can roll crimp but I've found it to be somewhat difficult on some brands of modern cases.

Lotta fun to shoot those loads & you'll get onlookers at a public range with 'em.

Just remember, you GOTTA clean those cases just like your gun!

I've never found a round ball that had a tight enough 'fit' for me to trust the accuracy. I've stuck to using 36 cal (.375) roundballs as 000 buck when I want a 'heavy' load.

Off the top of my head I think my shotgun's recommended load is 1 &1/4 oz of shot over 90gr of FFg. So any mix of pellets or slug of that weight and 90 grs of powder shpuld be good to go. I use pre treated wads, no 'cards' (use a half a wad instead) and it keeps the fouling to a minimum.

I regularly load Lee's 7/8th ounce 12 gauge deer slugs in Federal paper hulls. They work great and are pretty accurate, however Lee doesn't make a 20 gauge slug mold so I am tempted to get a roundball mold for my pump gun. Back in the day the old timers would call that a pumpkin ball slug.

For giggles I tried some 3 dram slug loads in my Ithica model 300 recoil operated shotgun. The kicker was after 5 shells the action looked no dirtier than it had looked before I fired the BP shells.

Semiautomatic BP is pretty neat actually! :D

Used to load the standard Lyman foster slug in one barrel of my navy arms double. Patched it tight over 3 1/2 drams of ffg. I tried both barrels and chose the one that put the slug closest to poa at 50 yds. Checked position after using the other, shot loaded barrel. Never had to reseat but still always checked. Gonna do it again this year after a 25 year hiatus.

Yes I have. The old "pumpkin" or "punkin" ball loads were just that. .690 ball will work fine. Depending on the barrel, they are good to about 50 yards. 70 grains of 2Fg, and use a fiber wad, NOT PLASTIC if you are going to handload some.

Yup, .69 roundball in the 12 gauge and .600 in the 20 gauge. I use 2-.125" over powder card wads then a 3/8 cushion wad followed by the roundball in a lubed pillow-ticking patch to bring it up to bore size. Both of these loads shoot quite accurately from cylinder bore shotguns. I load both plastic hulls and all-brass ones. You do need different wads with the all-brass shells and thicker or double patches on the roundballs. I use only real FFg black powder. Stupendous roar compared to those sissy smokeless loads. (flame and smoke too!)
