I have a question on rifled slug and don't know where to post my question. I am currently running a post in the Hunting Forum about the best bear gun to take on an extended fishing trip into Alaska. I have decided to carry my 18" barreled Mossburg for personal defense for an unpleasant encouter with a nasty Grizzly. My question is what is the best factory rifled slug on the market presently and since I load shot shells on a Dillon SL900. may consider loading my own. Again what do you experienced slug loaders use for dangerous game? Thanks for your help guys.

There is no doubt in my mind at least, the best dangerous game slug in the world for a smooth-bore barrel is the Brenneke.

As for loading them yourself?
Don't know.
They used to be available as individual component slugs but I don't know if they still are.

You might check here for slugs that are available.
The dangerous game slug looks interesting, and somewhat like a Brenekke.

Is your mossy a smooth bore or rifled? Not that it makes much difference, at close quarters defensive distances an old smoothie will pack a wallop. But some saboted slugs may have better penetration characteristics than a hollow base pumpkin. Like RC says a solid slug like the brenneke will penetrate further. There was a slug around for a while back that looked like a dart. BRI made it, I haven't seen any around for ten yrs. or more.

The Lyman sabot slug would be a candidate for a dangerous game slug. It's solid front and flat frontal construction, would mean lots of shock and deep penetration. It's a handloading proposition with potential.

Pictured is the 20 gauge version, I did that because midway does NOT have a picture of the 12 gauge version.

It loads inside a standard shot cup, it's a hollow base so it can be used in a smooth bore OR rifles! Lyman's shotshell handbook has loads for it in it. At 525 grains, it hurts at both ends!

I have the mold, have made and shot a few. If you're interested, I could send you enough for you to try out a few loads. PM me if interested.
