I recently purchased my first shotgun. A 12 Gauge Winchester 1300 Defender of 1991 vintage in excellent condition. I have been shooting 2 ¾” Winchester Super X #6 & #8 shot. At a gun show last weekend, I bought a couple of 5 round boxes of 12 pellet Federal 00 buckshot. When I got home I realized that they are designated 2 ¾” MAGNUM. :(

My question is; Are these magnum buckshot rounds safe to shoot in my 1300? I read in another thread that the magnum designation usually means more pellets and less powder which implies to me that they should be safe, but I would appreciate a second opinion before I blow my head off. :cuss:

You should be good to go, but the recoil might be somewhat more than you're used to. The 1300 tends to be a little light in overall weight - great for carrying, not so much so for shooting heavy hard kicking loads.

Magnum or no, the SAAMI pressure limits are the same for all 2-3/4" and 3" 12 gauge shells. As long as it isn't to long for the chamber, you should be good to go.

The main difference as others stated will be increased recoil.
Keep it really tight to the meaty part of your shoulder and "roll with the recoil."

Typically, if the gun states it handles 2 3/4" shells, it would include magnum loads.

If it states 2 3/4 & 3" shells, it will typically take both in Magnum loads (unless otherwise stated somewhere on the gun and/or in the owner's manual.

The 3" will really want to "knock you over" so, be careful!
