I was browsing around on Double Tap's website today looking at 10mm rounds and I saw their load of Barnes TAC-XP (no lead, all copper, rapid expansion). It is labelled at 125gr, 1600fps, 710ft/lbs out of a Glock 20 (I would be firing it out of a full-size 1911)

125gr seems light for a 10mm, but a TAC-XP moving at 1600fps doesn't sound so "light". Can I get some input on this? It would be purely a CCW/Home Defense round for me, for woods and nature protection I'd obviously go with something a lot heavier (maybe even a JFP)

Aww man don't drink the DoubleTap Kool-Aid. They can't even get the normal rounds to hit the mark and this are well short. Even Buffalo Bore couldn't get them there. Look on YouTube and you will find the video of it being tested by a Chrony.

Nope can't be done. All Copper reduces case capacity so not enough room for powder to attain those speeds.

125gr @ 1600fps? That's similar to 357 magnum load. I would prefer not to shoot that indoors as a HD load. That might go through the BG, out the door, across the street, through the neighbors house, and punch a hole in his pool.

Unless something has changed and Hornady reengineered that bullet to perform at those velocities, I'd pass. 10mm performs best with bullets of 180-230 grains. I load 180 gr. Gold Sabres to 1,400 FPS as my all-purpose load, 200 gr. XTP or 220 Gr. Hard cast for hunting.

Thanks everyone, I'll hold off on the 125gr and, after checking out Underwood, I think I'm going to hold off on DoubleTap altogether. The guys over at glock talk seem to love Underwood for 10mm, and looking at their loads (and prices) I think they may have won me over. Only putting a box or through her will tell.

Cheers

Way too light for the 10mm, especially at those speeds. I know that the 135gr Sierra at 1600fps nearly explodes on impact. You need more mass for reliable killing.

It's not comparable to a 125gr .357. Its sectional density is comparable to a 100gr .357.

For home defense they are proven to expand time and time again.

What we're worried about with such light bullets at extreme velocites isn't a failure to expand, but over expansion to the point that requisite penetration isn't achieved.

Just use the 9x25 Dillion 125 grain load (doubletap does make some.)

I think that is what he was talking about as for DT ammo. The 10mm, with 135gr slugs is quite powerful, way ahead of the .357s 125 at 1450fps. But he 9x25 is even farther ahead.

And most 10mms can be converted to 9x25 with just a barrel change.

The Barnes XPB may be light for caliber, but those bullets penetrate as deep as the heavies.

In factory .357 loads, yes. When hand loaded to the .357's full potential, no. And since we're talking handloads already, what's the point?

If the OP is going to use it for Home defense he should consider the noise that a 10mm would make inside, and it would be foolish to use the 9x25 dillon as HD. I use double ear protection with it and I'm almost 70% deaf, that being said If you do not handload Underwood is the best you will find, all their posted data is what you'll get...

I want a heavier bullet in the 10MM than the 125 grain. The lightest I go is the 155 grainer for practice and 180 grainer for SD. I too like the Winchester 175 SilverTip rounds.

You are better off doing your own research. You ask a question on a gun board you will get a million opinions and many without any facts to base it on. Could be they just like one brand or heard something.
