Like all premium ammo, Buffalo Bore is pricy for everyday practice. But it packs a whollop for hunting or defensive use.

If you roll your own there are gobs if .357 loads out there that will suit your needs. If you don’t, you can get started with a mega-basic set up for less than the cost of 200 rounds of Buffalo Bore shipped to your house.

Good luck with your quest, and stay safe!

There are plenty of ammo makers making .357 158 grain JHP. Winchester, Fiocchi, PMC, Magtech, Federal, Speer, Hornady...pretty much all manufacturers. Look it up on Midway USA.

Word of caution. Most factory (not talking about Buffalo Bore) 158g loads will not reach 1300 fps from a 4" barrel despite what the factories claim. This is according to my chronograph testing over a number of years. In my experience most will come in around 1200 fps and some will barely break 1100 fps.

Buffalo Bore is one of the few brands that actually produce the velocity they claim. Sometimes a bit more.

Dave

I think the OP is asking for 158 grain ammo that approaches being as hot as the original loading.

Not the commonly available commercial stuff that is watered down for older/weaker guns.

Try this. I guaranty this is genuine knuckle busting high speed whiz bang stuff.

The Federal 158gr JSP sold at Walmart is one of the hotter commonly available loads out there but it doesnt hit 1300. I believe the box states 1240 from a 4 inch barrel at the muzzle

I have carried 158gr Double Tap ammo before I started reloading the .357 Magnum. At the time there were the highest velocities offered. This was before Buffalo Bore. At the time they were using Speer GDHP bullets and looking at their site, they still are. When tested, the velocities were at or above what they claimed.

It seems they now also offer a Nosler bullet too which looks good.

I'm just reporting my first hand knowledge from a long time ago. I have no idea if the velocities have changed but I see no reason they would.

Heh, if you are ready to really run with the big dogs try a box of the HSM Bear Load. 180 grain WFN gas checked cast running at wrist spraining velocity. That is what I load the Security Six with when traipsing through bear country.

The internet tells me that the Remington htp .357 158gr sjhp is still a healthy old school load. I wanted to test some but had trouble finding any for sale at the time, so I tried their 180gr sjhp instead.

Remington is phasing out all their scalloped jacket ammo for a straight semi-jacket. Once its gone, it's gone; which is a shame because these bullets are just as good as anything out there. The 125gr SJHP load set the standard for self-defense. The bullets can still be had for reloading but even that won't last long. Oh yeah, Remington bought out Barnes so we'll see how that goes.

I carry Double Tap's 158gr Speer Gold Dot in .357 mag. I can't remember how it shoots (other than POA for my gun), but I did recently compare some of their 125gr SJHPs and 180gr hard cast SWCs. They're definitely both zooming along. The 125gr certainly had a more snappy recoil and the 180s felt tamer but with more of a push. I should probably shoot up another box of the 158s, just to refresh my memory.

Anyway, I know they come in boxes of 50, probably in boxes of 20, and if I remember correctly they are not quite as expensive as Buffalo Bore.

The reasoning is for self defense 180gr hunting loads are not what I would prefer for an SD scenario, and Please NO .357 load will ever be considered "Bg Dog" I have .44s and .454s if more power is needed.

Ok. I will tell you that the 357 bear loads are a handful out of a 4 inch duty revolver.
