Hey everyone, interested in purchasing a .17 HMR soon, mabey as a Christmas present.... The .17 HMR sounds like a fun little round, with it's blistering speed and v max bullet. Anyone have any suggestions on brands/models? I would like to keep it under 300 dollars.
-thanks

The Savage 93R17 and one of Marlin's bolt action models are in the low $300 range.

it's probably a toss up between the savage 93 and the marlin 917 in the price range you are considering. personally i like 93 for the accu-trigger but i have to admit it have not tried the marlin. mine is a BTV version and not something you want to carry very far. i like the safety and the action is solid. i think i paid $290 for mine with scope and rings.
the trick is finding the ammo your rifle likes. once you do, buy as much of it as you can.
here is a great source of info on the 17 HMR http://17hmr.net/

i have a CZ 452 American (a nice walkin' around rifle) that i consider top shelf. it costs more but the quality jump is obvious. the safety is odd in that it is the reverse from what you may be use to. i got so bored shooting paper targets with the CZ at the range last week that i started shooting fallen leaves on the backstop. the CZ is my favorite!

I have a HB Savage 93 that I won at a Friends of the NRA banquet. Didn't like th factory bedding job; so I glass beded the action, free floated the barrel, and gave it a decent trigger job and now this rifle shoots under 1'' at 100 yds with Hornady ammo. For an inexpensive rifle, she is one of my keepers. :)

The Savage 93R17 is a very nice rifle for the money. I have a friend that owns an 93R17-FXP and he has been satisfied with its performance...as have I. So much so, that I plan to purchase a model 93R17-TR in the near future.

:)

I picked up a Marlin 917V with the heavy barrel and wood stock for $189 at Bass Pro. Cheapest place I could find, plus it comes with 2 mags, a flush 4 round and a longer 7 round. Very happy with it. Spend another $20 for a quick detach sling and get ya a decent scope, I like the 4-12x range. Seems to be good for critters at the distance I shoot (15-100 yards).

Get one. Great rifle. Oh, wind plays heck with that little bullet and I don't care what you read about it's ballistic co-efficent. Learn to read the wind and you'll do OK.

The Savage has the accutrigger and it's great. The Marlin's trigger isn't great but it can be made very good or you can install a Rifle Basix.

Cnsider the NEF Sportster. Single shot, synthetic stock, bull barrel. I picked mine up used for about $100. New, they run about $160. Then spend the rest of your $300 on a good variable scope. I have a Leupold 3.5X10 on mine. The rig accounts for over 100 ground squirrels a year on my 50 acres of prairie. This is a cartridge that needs good glass to realize its potential.

17hmr varminter only?

Is a wheelgun in 9~12 rounds a decent buy for SD? I am puzzled as to where this tiny round finds utility, considering all the other well-substantiated calibers. Convince this sceptic. Thanks.

Do you need defense from rodents...if not leave the .17HMR for the varmints...and chamber it in a decent rifle. I imagine that the blast and noise will probably be substantial out of a little revolver. I'd rather have a .22LR for defense (not that I consider that ideal either). If you want a wheel gun for SD against bigger foes (like the two legged kind)...the .357Mag. will get the job done with authority (and 5-6 rnds will generally prove to be plenty).

:)

Maybe I expect too much from its following, but ...

.. what good is there in the 17HMR hand-gun? I'm not talking it down, and I have plenty of fire-power in handguns, but I have no super-capy. revolvers in the .17. caliber. Again: what is its specific usefulness; plinker only? Shopping; why should I buy one? Currently looking at rifle Rem.-700 in .308 to match my DPMS rounds, but the 17HMR is highly touted. Why?

It is probably the most accurate rimfire cartridge available (at least if you exclude the uber-expensive .22LR offerings from Eley and Lapua). It also affords better long range performance on small game and varmints. IMO the only drawback of the cartridge is the relatively high cost of ammunition.

:)

I have shot sniper grade weapons from around the world but the most accurate rifle I have ever shot at any price was my $150 savage 93 17 HMR! At the range I could put shot after shot after shot through the same 17 cal hole! The ONLY things I do not like about my savage is the trigger moves side to side a little and makes a little noise, and it does not like the poloymer tipped bullets only the TNT hollowpoints.

ssyoumans has a point. 7 round capacity is a plus for the Marlin. Normally I would say 5 should be more than enough, until you are caught in a southern Maryland soybean field facing a charging skunk with only 5 rounds in the gun and reloading on the fly. Dont ask how I know.:D

Because for $300 you can buy a rifle that will shoot half-MOA all day long and shoot laser-flat out past 200yds. Ammo is relatively expensive but you ain't gonna be burnin' up a brick or two a range session. It's best as a field cartridge and two $13 boxes of ammo last me a year, or two.

I've shot both the Marlin 917 and the Savage 93R17. I own the Savage. They both shoot extremely well. I bought the Savage because I found one with a left-hand bolt.

Mine does not have the Accutrigger and the trigger is bad enough to where I'm swapping it (actually the sear) with a Rifle Basix.

My only complaint about about the .17HMR is that it can be thrown off course by a yawning gnat. Other than that, it turns tundra squills inside out and and is fur friendly on foxes.

If you reload look at the .22 Hornet... it will cost maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less to run than the .17HMR, and is much more powerful (35gr @ 3,000fps). And it's easy to load down to .22 Mag/.17 HMR level. 45gr @ 2,000 fps.

The difference is you might spend $400 on a rifle instead of $300.

I have a Browning T-bolt that I just outfitted with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14x44 MC scope. The thing I like about the Browning, apart from being an overall great gun is it has a 10 round rotary double helix magazine which means lots of shooting and less loading. What I like about the Zeiss, well, what's not to like...yeah yeah the price.
