I decided I want to use a Colt 1849 Pocket conversion with 6" barrel for small game hunting. A reproduction of course. I'm pretty sure there used to be a company that made the 1849 Pocket with a 6" barrel, but I can't remember who. Can someone give me some information about it? And will a Kirst Cartridge Konverter fit it?

Check (www.cimarron-firearms.com) They have cylinders chambered in .32 S&W long, but I believe the 1849 Pocket Model is only available in the 4" length. You might consider the so-called Wells Fargo model, which is the same gun without the bullet rammer, but again it's only 4 " long.

Do be aware that on the Uberti line of C&B revolvers the .32 models have a bore diameter around .332" where the .32 S&W Long's bullet diameter is .312"

This condition isn't dangerous, but the oversized bore doesn't help in the accuracy department. You could have the bore lined, but you're loking at money.

Dixie Gun Works (www.dixiegunworks.com) used to offer both a '49 Pocket Model and Wells Fargo with a 5 1/2" barrel, and a bore running at .320", made under the Dixie name by Palmetto in Italy. Quality is somewhat lesser then Uberti. No mention of an optional cylinder.

Also check www.emf-company.com

Old Fuff, thanks for that great information.

Because I have read so many bad things about the poor quality of guns made by Palmetto, I do not want one. So it looks like my only options are to use an Uberti made gun with 4" barrel and have the barrel relined. Or don't use a conversion cylinder, in which case I would choose a model1862 Pocket Police because of the longer barrel. I see Cimarron now sells one with a 6 ½" barrel.

I used to shoot larger size revolvers, but because of serious health problems now I have to use very lightweight and very low recoil pistols. I love to shoot those old Colt pocket pistols because they fit me like a glove. It is by far the easiest revolver for me to cock and aim one handed. And the balance is perfection. Because of my aging eyes the front sight is real blurry on pistols with short barrels, and that's why I want to use one with a longer barrel for hunting.

Check with Numrich Arms. The Wells Fargo and Pocket Models actually did have a 6" barrel some time ago. They might have one in stock.

The Doc is out now.
