Never really cared for the imitation stag, horn, or "barked" grips. Faux ivory and faux pearl, if done right, are pretty decent looking and a whole lot less expensive than the real thing!

In my opinion the best faux ivory grips were the Tru-Ivory ones made by Bar-S grips. Available in varying hues from new ivory to aged ivory, these grips looked the part and were a fraction of the price for actual ivory.

Another very close match for ivory are grips made from American Holly wood. Private's Custom Grips use to turnout some of the nicest American Holly grips; they fit perfectly (didn't even have to send him the gun or grip frame), looked great, and were an incredible deal for the money. Unfortunately he retired from the grip making business some years back.

It's all subjective, and opinion, and to each his own with their own guns.
However, I REALLY dont care for the imitation grips like bone, horn, antler, ivory, pearl, or even plastic wood.
I'd rather have real wood, than any of the fake stuff.
I have some rubberized Hogue, and Pachmayer grips that I prefer quite a bit over any of the composite or plastic imitation stuff.
Something just doesn't seem right about taking an old school C&B revolver and adding plastic, etc. to it as an adornment.
If it was to improve function I could see the attraction for some, but not for looks.
If I'm going to put gaudy imitation grips on, they may as well be those naked lady grips posted above, or with your favorite album cover printed on them.
Something cheesy like that kind of goes with the style.

To answer your inquiry the grips on my Beretta Stampede are from NC Ordnance. Needed a little sanding and file work for a decent fit but for the money they gave me the faux ivory look that I wanted.

I have a pair of those holly grips from Private's. Bought them from him when the Ruger flat top .44 Special BH came out.
They look closer to ivory than the resin based grips. Gorgeous grips. prefect fit.

As soon as I got my Flattop Blackhawk I had to change out those cheesy plastic grips for something a bit more classy in appearance. I immediately ordered a pair of Ruger's Rosewood grips and while they were nice they weren't exactly the look I was trying for. Started scouring the Internet for something with maybe an ivory-like composition to it that wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg like real ivory, but still have a more organic approach to it in it's fabrication.

After much searching I came across Private's Custom Grips and contacted him via his website. Like you I loved the way American Holly looked, like it was the perfect color for a faux ivory grip material. I also couldn't believe his prices as they were so reasonable (had to get the Ruger medallions too), and his craftsmanship so impeccable I was thinking about having make some similar grips to the ones I ordered from him. But by the time I got around to it he already decided to call it a day and was no longer making grips.

My 1858 is stainless. Is. I am looking for black grips to contrast the stainless. Real horn is expensive so I was thinking about NC Ordinance. Any other suggestions?
