This is a 1862 dated, 1861 Springfield rifle-musket that I just received off of Gunbroker. The 1861 rifle was one of the most prolific arms of the Civil War, with over one million produced between 1861 and 1863. Approximately 250,000 were made at the US armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, the rest having been made by various contractors. Superseded by the Model 1863, most were used hard and were either surplussed out of Government inventories after the war, or were destroyed as being unusable. It's successor the 1863, served as the test weapon for the Allen conversion, popularly known as the trapdoor rifle.
This one came complete with it's bayonet. The patina on both pieces match closely, leaving me to believe that they have been together a long time, perhaps the entire 152 years they have been around.
somewhat hard to read 1862 date on lockplate:
even harder to read "US over Springfield"
Left to right:
1861 Springfield
1884 Trapdoor Springfield
1898 Krag-Jorgensen
1903 Springfield
1918 Winchester Model 1917
Springfield M1 Garand
M1A (m14 clone) mfg by Springfield Inc.
AR15-A2 rifle mfg by Colt
