Got myself a used Cimarron replica 1872 Colt "Open Top" in .38 cal. What a fun gun to shoot. This is not a percussion or a Richards - Mason conversion.
The 1872 was introduced as a cartridge revolver. Colt made about 7000 of these before they came out with the 1873 Single Action Army.

Give one a try if you ever get a chance to shoot one.

These are great sixguns, I love mine! It's a .44Colt and I like to carry it paired with my Uberti 1873 Deluxe Sporting Rifle or Lyman Great Plains rifle. Did a little stonework on the action and swapped the springs. Fitted with TruIvory.

Nice, both of 'em are real beauts. I like the 5 1/2" barrel. I've been toying with buying one while they can still be be had. I dont know why..... I've never bumped a 7 1/2" barrel on anything and wished it would have been just 2 inches shorter.

I was a little leery of the 7½" model at first but I've really grown to love it. You have to be careful with these guns because the sight radius is already so short. I do, however, love how the 5½" barrel looks. 451's gun above reminds me of the sixgun that started the topless craze for me, the one that Tom Selleck carried in Crossfire Trail. What I've really got the hots for is an 1860 Richards Transition model .44Colt with the 5½" barrel, antique finish and heavily aged TruIvory grips. I found an original in that configuration on Gunbroker and have been lusting hard ever since. I might end up doing that with my 8", instead of buying another.

I've got one of these with the 5.5" barrel in .44 Special. A very nice historic replica! Designed originally for the Army, but rejected as not being sturdy enough. Hence the 1873 "Peacemaker". A short lived "transitional" revolver, similar to the various conversions, but a true stand alone design. Very enjoyable to shoot!
