I happened to catch a part of this new TV show the other day. It was the chase scene and the Tim McGraw character bails off the wagon and pulls a scoped single shot rifle out to engage the bad guys.
It sure looks like an 1885 Winchester so was this just a typical production/prop mistake or was there an earlier model?
Discuss... ;)

Oh, and Merry Christmas. :)

It's a screw-up. Production started in 1885. What can you say it's Holloywood. ( Or, in this case, the Paramount channel )

I liked it a lot. Eagerly waiting for the next episode.

Sam Elliott is in it along with Tim McGraw as mentioned, and Faith Hill. Billy Bob Thornton had a guest spot and played the part well.

I only watched a small portion of the episode but it does get good reviews.
I noticed the 3 shot double shotgun too but that's such a standard mistake it barely registered on my "oops meter"...

From the producer of YELLOWSTONE. Mrs and I watch every episode. She is infatuated with Beth Dutton which scares me a little bit....:uhoh:.
I liked the guns and the horses and gear, and the women;)) Always a Sam Elliot fan(except "the ranch").
I was hoping the scoped rifle would be a Sharps....and yes an anachronism.

Very much like YELLOWSTONE....little joy , Lots of blood. :what:
I'll be watching anyway!

I'm a fan of the show (as long as the technical let-downs are few and far between...). My interest is very simple- it harkens back to a time when self-reliance was everything start to finish - and your commitments to friends, neighbors, and relatives (note the ranking...) was a mark of your character...

We've certainly come a long way since then - not necessarily for the better...

Yellowstone has been an addiction of mine; and 1883 is likely going to be, too.

If only for showing Fort Worth as not being in the Texas mountains (unlike News of the World).

Will be interesting to see how they feature historical firearms.

I thought it was great in spite of the few inconsistencies, a better than average western, and way better than most of the crap on the air now.

If you didn't catch it, that was Tom Hanks in a cameo as General Meade at the Battle of Antietam.

1885 is when Winchester started making the 1885. John Browning patented that rifle in 1878, and the patent was granted about 1879. The Browning brothers were making the rifles before 1885. So, unless the script identified the rifle, in the show, as a Winchester, it is not anachronistic.

Notably, the 20th-Century Browning/Miroku single shots were named the B-78, probably for the year 1878.

I am not being an apologist for the show. I have never seen an episode of “Yellowstone,” so, have no knowledge of the storyline, or how “1883” relates to “Yellowstone.”
