So a NG unit as in National Guard? Which would explain the butt plate numbers... I think it was suggested or I crossed it somewhere. Thus confirming with out a doubt Grand Pa was a Story teller. :) Either way it was fun, and I still have not got it out to the range yet :(.

A lot of surplus Krags also ended up with various veterans organizations, like the American Legion and the V.F.W. for use as parade/drill rifles. Some of them were later chrome plated so as to "dress" them up a bit when they were on display for parades or honor guard functions.
