I have a great handgun collection, mostly top-shelf. I want a 1911 9mm simply because I don't have one. Please don't tell me there are $700+ Colt 1911 9's out there cause I haven't seen any.

Thinking of getting a Rock Island 1911 in .38 Super and installing a 9mm barrel. I already have 2 9mm barrels, a match grade Fusion, and a "drop-in" 9mm barrel made by Colt. I am not seeking a one hole group at 25 yards, but I do want a reasonably accurate auto.

I have the Brownells catalog and the 9mm and .38 Super extractor is the same part number, however, I realize some adjustment may be required for proper functioning. I also realize the rims on the 9 and Super are different.

So, is it correct to "assume" I can have a resonably good range 9mm 1911 by buying a sub $400.00 RIA and installing a 9mm barrel and doing some minor extractor adjustment?

(I already have a few 9mm 1911 magazines)

If you find a 9mm in a 1911, I believe you will also need to change out the ejector to one for a Super 38. The reason for this, at least on the older Series 70 Colt's, was that the ejector for the 9mm is longer due to 9mm brass being somewhat shorter than Super 38 brass. Now I don't know if other manufacturer's have changed this; that is, making an ejector that is universally sized to function with both calibers, but it is something you might want to check out. Since I have been a big fan of the Super 38, this was one of neatest, and easiest, caliber conversions that was both economical and practical to do.

HiPower

I recently bought a Charles Daly HiPower for $319, new.
Nice gun, better balanced than the 1911.

But that's not what the OP wants. Interesting thread though.
SARCO has the 38 Supers for $329.
