I'm sure this one has been asked, and answered before, but here it is (again)

I was shooting my Springfield 1911-A1 "Champion" model Saturday. I had an issue that seems to follow 1 magazine. When loading the last round, there would be a 'failure to feed' i.e. the nose of the last round would be sticking up out of the ejection port, of course with the slide about half closed. Only happened on last round in mag.

I tried several types of ammo, Winny White Box, Sellier & Bellot, Federal American Eagle, and some commercial reloads. Wasn't brand sensitive, and seemed to follow 1 mag. I looked at both mags, but didn't see any obvious difference.

Suggestions, anyone?

TIA

I don't think thats what is meant by a stovepipe. A stove pipe is when the spent cartridge gets caught between the slide and chamber during ejection.

This is a failure to feed. If it only happens with one mag, I would get rid of that mag.

Stovepipes

Howdy foghorn.

I say ah, I say...The little pistol is sufferin' from what's known as
Bolt Over Base...aka Rideover feeds. What causes it is the slide
is outrunning the magazine, and it most often happens on the last round.
It's also more common on pistols with slides shorter than Commander-length. (4.25-inch barrel) The breechface is catching the round in the
extractor groove instead of on the back of the rim. The cartridge gets
shoved down at the rear, and the nose points skyward.

The combination of the shorter, lighter slide and the heavy recoil spring
makes it run so fast that the magazine can't keep up on that last round,
when spring tension is at its lowest.

You'll have to slow the slide down a little by using a lighter recoil spring, or
order a Wolff Extra-Power mag spring. I don't know if Wolff makes one short enough for that chopped mag that your Champion came with, but you can trim a standard spring to work. Cut a half-coil at a time and try to load
it. Cut from the bottom.

I'd try the magazine spring first. I'll have a look in Brownells to see if Wolff
makes a spring for that magazine and get back to ya.
