1911 and conversion kit

Ok, I am in need of the following and would like suggestions/comments.

I would like a stainless 1911, checkered wood grips (can be added later if the gun is right), full-size 5" model. This gun has to be able to reliably accept a .22 conversion. Which brings me to my next point. I need a .22 conversion recommendation to go along with the gun recommendation.

I'd like to keep the gun in the $750-850 range.

Pictures are highly recommended :D

Pros and cons are recommended as well!

Found this thread and I think I'll keep an eye on it because I was just thinking the same thing the other day about conversion kits. I've got the Taurus 1911 and I don't know which, if any, conversion kit would work for it. I also haven't heard of anyone using one on the Taurus so I'd like to hear about reliability as well.
 
conversion units

I've had good luck with the current production KIMBER Units, and the Marvel Unit 2's. Slightly better accuracy with the Marvel, but the Kimber was plenty accurate for plinking and practice.
 
The only 1911 that I know is under a thousand off hand is the Taurus 1911. But, I haven't really looked into it much.

I have an Advantage Arms .22lr Conversion kit for my Glock. It is picky as hell, the only bulk ammo it shoots is Rem Golden Bullet. Other than that its absolutely flawless. I ran a Marvel (unit 1) on a Kimber for a while and liked it so much I built a dedicated frame for it.

Not only unbelievably accurate but not ammo sensitive like some of my top end 22’s have been. In fact, one of the best feeding loads is the Fed 550 bulk pack stuff from Wal-Mart that simply chokes the S&W 41.

Free advice..whatever you do don"t buy the Ciener conversion. Trust me.
 
My Ciener runs good, and likes the SA Black Stainless Loaded, Friend just got a Marvel Unit 1. He had to send it back to the shop for a feed ramp issue, but we ran it the other day pretty hard. Very accurate. I bought the Platinum with adjustable sights. 15 round mags for the Ciener worked in the Marvel on a Kimber frame.

Springfield and kimber

I have a springfield stainless loaded model 1911 and use a kimber 22 conversion kit and couldn't be happier....unless Kimber come's out with a conversion kit for my EMP;)
 
I finally gave up and bought a dedicated frame for my Marvel Unit 2 from Fusion. Now that it's fit to the Marvel Upper, and has a light mainspring as well, it off and running 100% for now. Still not too many rounds through it, and it was more work than I expected to fit/build.
 
FYI, most .22 conversions fit non-ramped .45acp guns only.

Marvel is an exception, they fit most any 1911.
 
How much do those run, do you know? My budget for just the gun (not the gun and kit) is about 850.
 
I picked up my stainless xse ( used but not even broken inn ) for 600 , the kimber top end for 200 . Some say i paid too much for both LOL . I just shoot little holes and ingore them . After all my puppys whine too lol .
 
What about the Sigs? Anyone heard anything good or bad about their 1911's? They sure do look good...

Marvel is running a holiday special right now. 10% off. I'm going to take advantage of that this payday. :D

You might check Gunbroker for some stainless 1911's. The Colt 38 Supers are going for about 750-800.
 
Ciener's customer service sucks. That's pretty much been established as fact rather than opinion.

However, he makes good products at a decent price, which is why I have a ciener conversion on a dedicated frame. All of my other options were out of my price range, backordered by the MFG, or backordered/out of stock at a vendor.

I would recommend an adjustable sight model though, no matter what brand you get...

As far as what 1911, I'm partial to series I kimbers. However I've had great luck with several others.
 
I've had the AA Glock kit and now I'm running the Ciener on my 1911.

Both of them took some break-in, but the AA remained much pickier about ammo. I sold it to a guy, and I talked to him recently to see how it was holding up. He doesn't shoot it often enough to really tell if it's not working well or not.

The Ciener is great. Was picky for the first 500, but now it's very slick. I use hot ammo, (stingers or velocitors,) but I think now if I built a dedicated frame for it, with lighter springs, it would cycle anything all day long. I'm considering having an extra barrel tapped for a suppressor. It's also available with 15 rd mags.

A friend of mine, who had wanted a 1911 he could put a .22 kit on went and bought a nice Para. Bad news, it has a ramped barrel. After much web surfing and opinion asking, he determined that, Marvel makes a kit for it that is more expensive, but probably worth it, Ciener SAYS they make kits for it, but they never pick up the phone, so good luck getting one.

I think my Ciener was $250, I paid for it in one week with how much I shot it.
 
There's a pre series II Kimber Classic Stainless on GunsAmerica for $679 from Lewis Arms...then get a Kimber .22 conversion and you're good to go.
 
My Springfield Loaded was $660 two years ago.
Then I bought a used Ciener conversion kit for $200.
Both are grreat fun.
Don't know what that setup might cost today.
