1911 extended barrel and compensator kit

i'm thinking of getting a 1911 as a sidearm for hunting. i need the barrel to be 5.5" or longer and was wondering if they had an extended (threaded or not) barrel kit with a compensator that would slide over and sit flush with the front of the gun. the compensator is more of to hide extended barrel and for looks, just want something basic like a drop in. also are the barrels pretty much standard that it will fit in the same style (caliber and size) 1911 regardless or make?

This has a lot of pictures, but if you scroll down you'll eventually see their "Fusion Hunter Tactical XL/ Optical 1911 6 inch Tactical Long Range Pistol". This is going to run you around $1700 or more, depending on what you order.

This is a barrel / spring / guide rod kit for certain .45 ACP 1911's (see Clark's list for recommended makes.) The comp is required so the gun survives the forces the .460 Rowland cartridge generates. For a "Government" slide length, the barrel length should measure a little over 6". As far as cost goes, a 1911 might cost $800 or so, and then add $300 for the .460 Rowland kit.

The advantage of the conversion kit is that you have a 5" .45 ACP you can convert back to, if you're not using it for hunting.

On the other hand, if all you want to do with it is use it for hunting, the Fusion 10mm is nice. Especially with the removable scope mount.

If you want a 1911 for hunting the 460 Rowland is about the most power you can get safely and w/o tearing it up. It will wear your gun faster than a 45 acp. You can push up near bottom end 44 mag power levels. A 230gr XTP @ 1300 fps will definitely work on whitetails as will the 200gr XTP loads which I prefer. The advertised numbers are real, not hype. I chronographed them myself out of my gun. I have a Clark conversion kit and it is high quality and was a drop in fit for my Kimber target. It is very accurate to boot. Set up properly w/ quality ammo it turns a 1911 into a whole different animal. As stated the comp is not cosmetic. It is a necessary part of the design to prevent the gun from getting torn up. There is a good amount of info on the net about the 460 Rowland. I recommend doing some research before jumping in. In my opinion it is not a beginner's cartridge. It is a high pressure chambering for a 1911 and there are things you need to be aware of to be safe with it.

thanks for the link, i think i've found what i need. cheaper way would just be getting the extended barrel. but this kit is 5.5" right on the money.

I don't think 45 auto a very good hunting round Its made for 2 legged critters not 4 legged.

Don't count on the barrel just "dropping in". It is probably not going to fit like a replacement part for your Glock or Bushmaster. Expect to do some "tweaking".

i'm currently using a glock 22 in .40 sw, not that i plan to do any real hunting with it. i rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

The Brownell's part you linked to is made by Clark Custom and sells for $279. The .460 Rowland kit is also made by Clark Custom and sells for $295.

The reason for the .460 Rowland kit is twofold -

1. You get .44 Mag performance with a 1911 frame
2. Clark Custom will fit the barrel to your slide for free

I don't have one of these. I keep thinking about it, but I haven't made a purchase yet. I understand quite a few shooters use them successfully for hunting whitetail at fairly close range.

Check the links on the Clark Custom web site. Users report recoil is similar to .45ACP.

Probably not something you'd want to use for shooting 3000 rds/month, but supposedly accurate and safe if you follow the recommendations from Clark.
