I have a new 1911 Springfield Armory GI Champion Lightweight Commander, obviously the upper is all steel, the lower (frame) is alloy. About a month ago I put its first 50 rounds through it, I cleaned it, looked great, put it away in gun safe. Then, I went to the range yesterday and put 50 more rounds through it; not reloads, factory new ammo, brass cases, not aluminum. Then I went home, cleaned the weapon and I noted the feed ramp has a 1mm long chunk of steel missing on the left edge of feed ramp (opposite the extractor side of the slide), the damage is 1mm long, 1/2mm wide,maybe 1/4mm deep, about mid-way up the left edge of the feed ramp. Like I said, I ran 50 rounds through it flawlessly. I have Wilson Combat mags and was using brass cased factory ammo. Last I heard, brass is weaker than the steel used in the barrel ramp. So the only thing I think could cause such damage is the firing pin block portion of the slide. But since after the first 50 rounds there were no problems, why would there be damage now? If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Meanwhile, I'm going to take it to a gunsmith to see what he says. If this is a factory flaw, then SA should replace the barrel and since its new, I would assume it is a factory flaw. My other concern is that if the barrel is replaced, that this same problem will occur again with the new barrel. And ideas?
