I'm sure I've read the cause somewhere, but could someone briefly refresh me on the usual cause?

Happened after it was cleaned and lubed, but I can't imagine doing much harm there.

Thanks

Just my opinion and I don't want you to take this the wrong way but for you to ask what could cause such a malfunction means you probably don't have the skill or working knowledge of the 1911 to make the repair. My suggestion is very simple, take the firearm to a qualified gunsmith familiar with the 1911 and let him diagnose the problem and fix it. Anything short of that is potentially opening yourself up to serious legal trouble. Hammer follow can occur with out of spec parts, wear, or can be caused by a misguided attempt at a trigger job. Just my opinion but let a gunsmith take care of this one if you aren't one yourself.

Could be any number of things. lets start off with the basics, is the gun stock, have any parts been replaced or altered? was it bought new or used? how long did it operate normally before this happened?

Ah never mind. I'm not planning on repairing it myself. I do know a local expert from this forum who would help.

I will send to Dan Wesson for warranty. If I had to guess I have put 10-12k rounds, mostly lead, through this 5" Valor and it's bone stock.

Take the mainspring housing & grip safety off again.
Then check and make sure you have the 3-leif spring installed correctly.

Left & center arms 'on top of' the sear & disconnector.

If either arm is 'Under' the sear leg or disconnector you will have a problem.

Need to revise my statement, 1500-2000 rounds, sorry about my defective brain :)

It seems like it isn't a coincidence about the recent clean and lube... will try that and check the mainspring

the auto did not empty the magazine, it only did one extra shot FWIW

Feathering the trigger and/or a weak grip.

Left and/or center leg of the mainspring improperly tensioned.

Defective sear nose and/or hammer hooks.

And don't worry about cleaning the lube off the hammer & sear.

If it won't work right lubed, it won't work right dry either.

BTW: They should be lubed.

It's possible you bump fired. This can happen with a fairly light trigger and gripping too loose when firing. May be nothing wrong with the pistol.

I wish you were all right about the loose grip/light trigger. That has not been an issue as I average about 600 rounds a week. Plus I tried to duplicate the error withh a different magazine with only 2 rounds in it and autofire happened again. I put away the pistol at that point.

Sounds like I best send to Dan Wesson unless I can visualize something by only field stripping. If it's internal they need to fix it as it should be under warranty. I have a few other 45's to shoot. Eventually Les Baer will send me a 1911 he's working on but I'm not holding my breath on that.
