Springfield (as you know),Kimbers...ParaOrdinance...S&W..just pick one.I would say my most accurate 1911 is the SW 1911 PD,and also the XD's (for me) work well.

I have 1911's from Colt, Smith & Wesson, Kimber, Springfield, Charles Daly(armscor/ria), and 2 hand-built ones with frames and slides from Essex, Fusion, and Caspian.

Taking out the handbuilt ones, I'd put them in exactly that order. Every one was under $1000.

Didn't know all the Springfield fans were still grumbling. On the top end the firing pin and hole are an issue. You can't drill out the firing pin hole to accommodate a .45 pin without risking the entire slide.

On the lower half there are issues with the ejector. The distance between the legs is not to spec nor is the diameter of the legs. But, then Springfield glues them in place. I wonder what I should do with my ejector pin. Just trash it?

Let's see, the slide is not to spec and even simple repairs may involve major parts. The frame is not to spec and even simple repairs may involve major parts.

Quite frankly, at this point I no longer care about Springers. The frame and slide come out of the factory with issues because that is the way SA wants them.

If I can't replace minor parts like a firing pin or an ejector with mil spec parts I really care nothing more about the, I guess I should say, imitator.

I've never bothered to take a Springer all the way down. The firing pin is out of spec and the substitution is a second-rate choice. The ejector doesn't even have an empty hole where the pin should go. How much further should a 1911 "mil spec" gun be taken down to assure one's self it is not worth bothering with?

How much farther do we have to go to find out that yet another part will not work?

Springers are popular with custom builders because they have learned the quirks and there are a lot of people who think that Springfield has something to do with an American-made gun. Even when they find out it is made in Brazil they stick by the USA mindset.

Rock Island, made in the Philippines, and Charles Daly, also made in the Philippines don't have problems building to mil spec. We only make exceptions when there is an American name attached to a South American gun?

I don't like 1911s from Brazil. They are (at the very least) second-rate guns.

I'll add something else. As an RO at IDPA for quite a few years now, if a new guy with a Springer shows up there will be a failure at the line. At our last match a guy who has had trouble with a Spinger for at least six months showed up with a SIG. A new guy with an SA had failures in three of four stages.

Like any of those custom builders I can fix the issues a Springer brings to the line. It just isn't worth it for me because I shoot for fun, not to figure out how to fix someone else's problems.

Reckon I better duck and cover. Those folks who think that Springfield is a U.S.-made gun are about to go ballistic over their Third-World pistols.

For the money, you may want to check out the Taurus pt1911.
It is very smooth out of the box.
Will eat anything you want to feed it.
$ for $, a fantastic bargain.
Money left over for lots of ammo.

i second the colt gold cup. real tackdriver. I got mine cheap because my gun store was moving, so with discounts plus trade ins i got it for $400. Regular price was $969, which sounds a bit pricey for a first 1911 but consider a bare-bones colt will run $700. Like the guy in the gun store told me, you can't fit a 1911 with match grade adjustable sights, match grade barrel, adjustable trigger and the higher grade colt bluing for a mere $269 so you're money ahead to go witih the gold cup if you plan to upgrade at all.

+1 to Fusion Firearms. I finally took delivery of mine yesterday. I ordered it the last week of May and had it built exactly to my specs. As a Kimber owner (Pro CDP II) which I love....the fit, finish and workmanship on this Fusion is astonishing.

I see their prices have risen $100-250 since I first placed my order...but I absolutely believe that they are STILL a bargain and can go head-to-head with custom 1911's that cost many hundreds more. I also think these will go up even more in cost as more people catch on to this company.

The owner/president Bob Serva was the President of Dan Wesson Firearms before and after they were purchased by CZ. After that, he started fusion in the late part of 2007. They are an absolute pleasure to work with and keep you in the loop as your baby is being crafted...they'll create anything your wildest dreams can conjure up.

Here's some pics of mine:

Yet another vote for Colt. Colt has indeed had QC issues in the past, but presently, things seem to be going well. My 5" Colt pistols have been reliable. I tried three Kimbers, and all took minor to major work to be made reliable. Kimber will never get another dime from me.

Presently, I must use a DA .40 duty pistol, so my 1911 days are largely in the past, though retirement may change that. I kept my Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special, and let the other 1911s go. Of course, Les Baer is above the price range being discussed in this thread, but the way Baer pistols' frames are sculpted, where the trigger guard meets the front strap, makes all other 1911s feel clumsy to me now. I am spoiled.
