I have lost my 1911 in the couch (I know i'm embarrassed) and I have looked and looked and cant find it, If I have to buy a new slide stop is there going to be any difference in quality from a Wilson combat or ed brown slide stop and a off brand one? Do slide stop's need to be fitted by a gunsmith?

Oh Yea!

You are assured of getting a forged steel slide stop from Wilson or Brown.

An off-brand stop could be MIM, or pot metal for all you know.

Also not uncommon to see them out of spec or warped so they don't set flat on the frame.

Spend the money on a good one.

Or get a few frends, some beer, and turn the couch up-side down and shake it until the old one falls out.

Yeah, off brands don't match the quality of those that you mentioned. What did it come with?

If you didn't want to spend the money on a tool steel piece from Wilson or Ed Brown, the older Colt's slide stops were made from good quality steel. Of course, you never know for sure what you're getting unless you know how to spot what you're looking at. Sometimes you can find a gunsmith getting rid of one on a build project, but you generally need to know that 'smith personally.

Most quality slide stops will just drop in without fitting.
