My new S&W 1911 trigger seems to have a lot of verticle trigger play. No movement side to side, but it can be moved up and down. How much play is normal for a 1911?

Some guns have more trigger play than others. Generally speaking, play is good for guns intended for defense. Nearly zero tolerances are good for NRA bullseye shooting. If yours has a lot of play, then an oversize match trigger could be fitted to reduce the play. You might want to contact S&W and see what they say is an acceptable amount of play.

I had the same issue with my very early (#362) SW1911. Mine wasn't real bad, but it had enough vertical play, that I had to really concentrate on pulling exactly straight back, or the trigger would bind a bit.

I replaced mine with a Ball Bearing Trigger from www.ccactions.com

I sent Carlos the dimensions of my undersized stock (Texas Armament) trigger, and my best quess at the actual frame measurements. He made me up a trigger that was slightly oversize in both the finger pad and bow, at no extra charge. It only took about 2 minutes of polishing to make it fit perfectly.

BTW: The grooved serations being polished off, was my request.

The imporvement has been dramatic.

Good Luck...

Joe
