What are some of your recommendations for feeler gages and other useful tools for tuning a 1911?

Go to: (www.brownells.com) and order a copy of their extensive hardcopy catalog. Between the covers you'll find almost anything and everything you might need. Usually they'll send you a free copy of the instructions that come with the more specialized tools, jigs, and fixtures on request.

A lot of folks that do this sort of work also make their own tools of a simple nature, such as scrapers.

You can also buy a copy of the original USGI blueprints, although today's makers seldom pay any attention to them - which is part of the reason their products don't always work. Be that as it may, a set of quality calipers and a blueprint can sometimes spot the reason something that should be working isn't.

I’m not sure if you are asking what tools it takes to built a 1911 or just tune it to the shooter/ammo. For tuning purposes I most often use the tools below. Extractor tension tool makes it easy to bend “just enough”. The mainspring tool keeps parts from reaching ballistic speeds. The spring test fixture helps when you get your springs mixed up.

Yea I just installed my own trigger and I want to be able to measure the trigger pull, measure extractor hook, poor mans trigger job, other little things to tune it up. Thanks Fluff and Morris -

Some tools are essential and some tools are recommended over others for quality, function, etc.. Give me your personal list of bench essentials.

Ok for a really cheap trigger pull gauge see the photo, it’s not digital, but you never need batteries.
