Tuner,

I remember a subject I don't find here that had to do with installing a square edged firing pin keeper and how it effects the timing of a 1911 pistol.

Wasn't it closer to JMB's original design configuration to not have the rounded edge recocking the hammer?

I'm guessing it was in one of the 1911 focused forums that I haven't visited in years and wonder if we could have a short course here in THR?

Dang!

And though I didn't look through I'm probably in that 2005 thread somewhere to drive home my lagging memory.

Thanks RC, I have two pistols running with square stops and couldn't remember why.

In a nutshell...the smaller radius reduces the slide's mechanical advantage in overcoming the mainspring and adds a tick more delay...and by leaving less speed and momentum after the hammer cocks, it reduces the impact with the frame a bit.

It changes the time of the slide's trip rearward, but not the timing.

Timing is mechanically fixed and will occur at the same place in the cycle, regardless of the speed of the cycle...while time is a function of speed and distance.

The slide is only "timed" at its terminal points...where it stops against the impact abutment in recoil and by way of the lower barrel lug hitting the slidestop crosspin when it goes to battery.
